Toni Onley 1929 - 2004
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of one of BC's
aviation icons, Toni Onley.
Toni perished in an afternoon crash on Sunday February 29th as he was
practising touch-and-go landings on the Fraser River in his Lake
Buccaneer. The exact cause of the crash is not known at this time.
Toni was born on the Isle if Man in the UK, came to Canada in 1948, and
settled for a time in Ontario. He moved to Penticton in 1955, and later
to the lower mainland.
Toni had been an icon of the Vancouver Lower Mainland flying scene since
obtaining his license in the 1960's, and quickly became known as the
"flying artist" for his habit of flying in to a remote location and
setting up his easel. He owned three airplanes in his lifetime, a
float-equipped Fleet 80 Canuck, a Polish ski-equipped Wilga 80, and
finally the Lake LA4 Buccaneer amphibian.
Toni was a close friend to many in the aviation and artistic communities
in B.C. and will be greatly missed.
Toni is survived by his daughter Lynn, his son James and a grandson.

Don't how Canada compares to the US with insurance costs, but can
tell you that mine is considerably less, at least it was last
year. I will be talking to my insurance guy again in a few months
so will find out again then. I also have several hundred hours
amphib time, so that might help, too.
We just had another fatal amphib accident here last weekend, so
that won't help our costs. I returned from a flight, and found
out that I had just flown over the area pretty well the exact
time that the accident happened. I didn't see anything at the
time, but wasn't looking either.

quoted through US Insurance Specialties for 4,550.00
US for Hull in-flight
coverage on amphibs with from May to October and then
back to wheels again. Coverage

was wanting to know if
this sounds about what others are paying.
I have only 10 hours of dual with no amphib time but I
do have over 200 hours
with retractable gear time.
