The Murphy Builders Site

I am at the point where I would like to temporarily install the engine to the
engine mount on the firewall so that I can start planning my
firewall/cowling/exhaust layout.

All riveting is done from the firewall aft, with the exception of the
intrument panel. It is only cleco'ed in place.

Since the instrument panel is supposed to be a structural part of the
fuselage, I am wondering if the full weight of the engine on the firewall
might create some forces on the as yet un-riveted instrument panel and/or the
FUS-8 upper panel that could damage them?

Engine is a Continental IO-240. Dry weight is 250 lbs with accessories.

I appreciate any comments.

As long as it's cleco'd in you're fine, and as a matter of fact pretty sure
I had mine out for wiring when my engine was already on without any
problems!

Hi Roger

Mine is hanging on the firewall with no instrument panel and no
dashboard (the panel that rivets to the top of the instrument panel).
Doesn't seem to make any difference at a steady 1 g ;)
If you don't have the wings on make sure you don't stand it on its nose
while working on it though as there won't be much weight on the tail
with an empty fusulage...

Hi Roger !

Shouldn't be a problem. Assuming you have done all the "Float-Fix"
beefups to the firewall ... Not sure if you have done this already,
but many builders are adding a 1 1/2" or 2" aluminum angle to the bottom
of the panel, all the way across. Cut outs at the corners, and bent,
with bridges rivetted in, and rivetted to the door posts. This provides
a ~ 1/8" thick mount for throttle, mixture, trim switch, etc., and adds
a lot of stiffness where it is needed. ... JAS ...

YES! Ken brings up a good point for EVERYONE! Make sure you have a good 30+
pound object in on the cabin floor, about the float bulkhead area, when you
install the motor and under no circumstance remove same until you have the
wings and tail feathers on!

Ken, BobP, & Wayne,

Thank you all for your comments & suggestions. I felt pretty sure it should
be ok, but wanted to ask anyway, rather than take a chance and bend
something. I do have Wayne's firewall doublers in place, as well as a 2 inch
(.063)channel formed & fitted along the bottom of the instrument panel. The
Continental engine mount incorporates a cross tube between the upper firewall
mount points, so I feel everything should be pretty rigid.

And I will add weight to the tail prior to releasing the engine hoist!

OK I only lost a few heartbeats and caught it just before the tail
smacked the ceiling. Mine sat there for weeks quietly waiting for an
opportunity to strike when I leaned on a wrench or something. I think I
had the tail raised a bit as well. Of course I remembered a warning from
someone else about a second too late...
