Spring gear leg wieght

Spring gear leg wieght

I Weighed the spring gear and the attached 8.00 tires, wheels/axle, brakes
and brake line today. They were 30 LB each and the Scott tail wheel was 8 LB for
a total of 68 LB.

I weighed the Rebel with different scales this time and it came in at 1145
LB. Much better! I weighed it on the wheels but could not get the plane level
for flight because I didn't have enough blocks to block up the mains.

I had to return the scales today and I'm wondering, if MAM says the CG
doesn't change and that seems to be the experience I've heard from other 1800 amphib
drivers, I'm very tempted to plug in the new empty weight and go with the
same CG I had on wheels. Any comments on this?

Found a set of "accountant" scales, heh? On the c of g, if I were
you, I'd move it back about .3 in your case to allow for the
heavier spring gear removal. Heck, if you're using 1145, the
plugged c of g won't be any less accurate.

So, when are you going to fly it?

I'm just catching up on the float talk so here's what I can weigh at home.
The gear legs which are 4130 tube, including full aluminum fairings, die springs
including covers (leather), ditco tires large and soft kind 8:00- 6:00 I
think, still with 10lbs of air, matco brakes, hub caps, the bolts for
reinstalling and Mr Mohrs bushings weigh 30.2lbs each. Sorry the brake lines are not
there for accuracy. :) So total is 60.4 lbs + the butterfly bracket, another
.5lbs.
The next step is to go and find my numbers on the floats alone and the
total aircraft weight. They are the MAM amphibs with the original lines and .040
and .032 bottom skins.
The airplane is a rebel 0-320 a2b 150hp warp drive 72" 3 blade with a
harmonic dampner, with Fife wing tips and Angus' leading edge. Other than that it has
a basic IFR package and full headliner. Wayyyy to much S!@$%T.
I do have the warp drive running pretty fine pitched for my type of flying
which is I may bounce off 6 or 7 lakes in an hr, in amongst the boat traffic
so I'm turning 2550 on my T.O. run. In turn my speed at 2500 rpms level flight
is only just over 95mph. Full throttle gives me pushing up near 2900 rpm, and
I chicken out before it peaks out. Typical run on the lake with me 200+ lbs,
30 gals of fuel and still searching the sweet spot, less than 8sec. What a ball
!!!!! Well gotta run. Curt N97MR

Walter,

As I hear the other builders weighing their stock gear and all saying it's 30
lb. which is what my spring gear, wheels, tires, brakes, lines and all
mounting hardware weigh, I'm thinking the spring gear its self is not any heavier.

Extra weight must be all those built up reinforcing plates still attached the
airframe. If my thinking is correct then the CG change if any should be very
close to the stock gear/amphib.

1145 lb. is what the plane weighed according to the scales. I didn't have to
call my accountant after all! I weighed the plane three time rotating the
scales to check them and every time I had a different total weight all with in
24lb. of each other.

I think the best option would be to average all the weights, but what the
heck...I just used the lowest weight.

Well this weeks wakes and funeral are out of the way, so I've had a bit of
time to add to this today.

Weighed a set of aluminum gear legs (main/drag brace/joiner gusset
etc-everything but axle and wheel assembly) and bungee struts/safety cable
and bungee loops with bracing and cover of .025 = 14lbs

Same gear legs but with my 6" die spring struts instead = 20lbs

Pair of leaf gear legs with outboard saddle brackets = 20lbs

Therefore there would be no net difference between the "piper style" gear
legs using my die spring struts and the "leaf" leg gear when it comes to
installing the floats, other than maybe the minimal weight of the bolt on
float brackets for strut pickup at the fuselage if you have the leaf gear.

The overall empty weight of the aircraft is another thing due to the plate
doublers in the fuselage construction, but even that isn't extreme since it
amounts to the weight of about a 2.5' x 4' piece of .063 6061 T6 and three
or four hundred RV1613/9 rivets....nothing else!
