PVC cylinder shaft spacer for amphibs

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:59 am

Yes, the PVC half pipe serves as a stop when pulling the plane
backwards into my hangar. For normal taxiing and parking you
don't need it, as long as the front wheels are left in the
forward position.

It shouldn't take that much muscle to cycle your gear. I can't
remember exactly what my pressure is, but I think when it hits
above 50, I have reached full down or up. Is everything greased
well, and are you sure nothing is binding? Are you using the
right hydraulic oil, ie Dextron III? Which way is your handle?
Mine is pointing to the front so my hand is close to my knee
where I am sitting, and seems to be a good leverage position.
Also, when it is cold out, it does take a little more effort,
because everything is a little stiffer.

Be sure your pump is very securely fixed to the floor, or you
will soon be breaking rivets or something.

You'll definitely have to fix that front cylinder, though.

Hi Walter

What is the purpose of the PVC tube you slide over
your front cylinder shaft
on the amphibs when the gear is down? Is it to prevent
the gear collapsing in
the event the pressure bleeds off while and your
pushing the plane around?

I got the gear cycled for the first time on the
amphibs today and found the
right front cylinder is leaking out the shaft. Bad O
ring maybe? I left it
alone hoping the next time I'm there it will somehow
fix itself. Wishful thinking
I guess.

I was a little surprised at the amount of muscle it
takes to pump the gear
and I only pumped it to 100lbs. Because I wanted the
hoses to exit the pump to
the rear I reversed the handle and turned the pump
around so I have pressure on
the up stroke. I had better start lifting weights to
strengthen my biceps.

Hi Bruce
You need something to keep the gear from retracting if the nosewheels are
facing the wrong way around. When I hangar my plane I pull it forward to
turn the wheels the right way and climb up and give a couple pumps before
moving it the next time. you may as well pull that cylinder and change the
o-ring cuz it ain't gonna get any better. If you pump slowly it doesn't
take nearly as much effort.

PVC cylinder shaft spacer for amphibs

Real pisser (no pun intended) though when the floats are brand new and you
paid good money for them isn't it? Pull it off and send it back to Murphy
for a replacement. Why should you have to live/play with it. Call Stephan
and make sure they have one on the shelf first though! The cylinders are
apparently in the $300+ each area, as a local guy here priced them to see if
they would be economical for moving a plate on hydraulic skis. Went with an
off the shelf high quality name brand cylinder for 1/2 the money!

$300 for that homebrew clag? That's getting pretty greedy if you ask me.
Wayne Are those the skis clare's working on? How was the fly-in sunday? I
got up for an hour in the morning and it was so clear I think I saw the
smoke from your BBQ ;)
