More Spring Gear Questions!

Sorry Jim, but the list software doesn't allow attachments, and that means
anything other than text. You're welcome to upload the image to the file
library and then point people to that.

Above this line of text I have tried to cut and paste figure 14.1.17, step
40
of my 18/12/01 spring gear section. Not sure how it will come through.
Anyway, I also have wondered how to install Fus-35. I have not installed
it
or the lower fus-40 skins yet. My plan is to install (sandwich) fus-35
between
fus-40 and SG-13. I also made a new fus-40 out of .032 full length to get
rid
of the packer strip. I placed my .032 fus-40 between fus-7 and the carry
through tubes. I was then going to start fus-35 at the aft end of fus-7
(about even
with the aft end the square carry through tubes) which will keep it away
from
the spring gear saddles.
I have not assembled this yet so I have been keeping quiet to see what
others
have done, but there are not that many spring gear rebels on the list so I
will throw this out for you to think on, or further confuse you!
Please feel free to send me an email off the list if further explanation
is
needed.

It seems like every time I go to the garage, I end up with MORE questions
than answers. I am STUCK!

1. Do you have any photos of this particular plate layering area of
concern?
2. Since your FUS-35 angles are on the outside of ALL of the plates, are
they 3/4" x 3/4" OR are they 3/4" x 1" to compensate for the double
.063"
plate thickness at the forward end?
3. Do you have an extra (.040) packer material under the gear saddles?

I hope that my explaination of this is clear and hope that you might
shed
some more light on how your spring gear packers, plates and saddles are
to
be layered.

Thanks AGAIN in advance!

More Spring Gear Questions!

Hello Bruce:

I seem to be having trouble with the way that the outside Plates, SG-13 and
SG-7 are layered.

If I lay the SG-13 & SG-7 on the floor skin (with the .020" packer) and set
the FUS-35 3/4" x 3/4" angle along the sides and on top of the plates, it
raises the forward end of FUS-35 UP the thickness of the two .063 plates
(approx. 1/4 inch). This would mean that I need to make a NEW FUS-35 3/4" x
1" so it would fit correctly. THEN, I will need to make some sort of .040
spacer plate to fit around the front end of the FUS-35 (where the Saddle
Bracket will sit) to make everything even with the FUS-35 and a flat surface
for the saddle.

Another way is, if I put the FUS-35 down first, then a .040 packer full
width (with the same footprint as SG-7) and trim around the forward end of
FUS-35, then lay the SG-13 and SG-7 down. This would mean both plates (SG-13
& SG-7) will end up being riveted on top of FUS-35. With this in mind, there
would be a full span joggle under the SG-13 to floor transition.

I have been looking at this for 2 weeks now. The manual doesn't show
anything as to how if the FUS-35 goes on the bottom or the top of this
setup. I have called MAM and got their typical vague answers. I have
received no specific answers to my pointed questions.

It seems like every time I go to the garage, I end up with MORE questions
than answers. I am STUCK!

More Spring Gear Questions!

HI Terry

Sorry you're having so much trouble with the spring gear installation. I wish
I could be more helpful but I actually never installed my spring gear. My
gear was installed by the previous owner.

I forwarded your mail to the list server so the other builders can hopefully
give you more assistance.

I can tell you the SG plates are built up on top of the floor inside and
outside under the cabin. The corner raps go on top of the build ups and I'm not
sure about the corner angles. The 2" x 2" x 6" angle I was revering to earlier
were the spring gear fix MAM issues a few years ago.

Keep at it. It's worth all the effort!

Bruce

Terry
Go to the Maddog files and go to rebel fuse. Wayne posted pictures for me
about a year ago and they were helpful. Make up another fus 35 that is
wider to allow enough edge distance and I believe the last layer or two of
the cross plates will go on top. Just make sure that the layering is even
where an edge is left and another edge starts of the same thickness. You
will have to make up I believe one more packer than the book specifies. Am
really busy right now but if u still have trouble, get back to the list and
I'll go take an hour break and get all the no's and thicknesses and
sequencing of the plates.
