Bob, Flapperon batting

Bob,

I went to Walmart and got polyester batting in two
sizes. I got 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch. You recomended 1/2
inch but that seems kind of thick. Is it okay to use
the 1/4 inch?
Have read both ways on using and not using the batting
some say do it others say don't. This sure gets
frustrating.

Thanks,
Keith

Wayne, that is something else that had crossed my
mind. To me it is like getting ones sleeping bag
wet-its the same kind of material.

I've never put the batting on any I've covered.
Takes a bit of work to
fill
the pinholes, but not a big deal. Another thing is
the batting cuts down
on
clearance to the trailing edge as well...so hope
you can adjust those
hinges
after the fact if you go with the batting!

Bob, Flapperon batting

Hi Keith !

If it's a fairly loose batting, you should be able
to squeeze the 1/2" down to about 1/8" or so - that is perfect !
If it's denser, then you may have to go with the 1/4" ...

When it squeezes down under the fabric, it will be no
higher than the rivet heads, and helps protect them. This stuff
is synthetic, and doesn't absob water, so that's not a problem,
and it is protected by the fabric & dope anyway - if water gets
in there, you'll have a problem with or without batting !!

The clearance from the trailing edge should not be an issue,
as it would hit the rivets if not the fabric ... you may have to
(A) run along the trailing edge with a coarse file or Dremel tool
in a guide, (B) bend the trailing edge gently with a long slotted
piece of wood, and/or (C) fasten a strip of clear Teflon about
1/2" wide to the bottom of the wing skin, as gliders have been
doing for years. The Teflon is probably a good idea, in any
case - you want as small a gap at the trailing edge as possible,
and the reduced friction of the plastic, if it does touch !

Personally, I will always follow Poly-Fibre and Murphy's,
and accepted common practice and use the batting - it just makes
a nicer job. But - this is one of those areas that makes homebuilding
interesting - do whatever you think is best/safest, and live with it !
(Just as Steve Witman did ... :-( )

I think the 1/4" polyester is fine. The real trick to having your leading
edge fabric flat and without wrinkles and bumps is to iron it out with your small
taping iron (the kind you use for model airplanes and buy at a hobby stores)
several time until they disappear.

If you don't have a copy of Polyfibers fabric manual you need to get one
before you cover.
