Covering Flapperons

I am starting to cover my flapperons and was wondering
about putting anti-chaf tape on the ribs. Do I put the
tape on all the rib flanges? I have covered all the
rivet heads and not sure about putting the tape on
just the edge of the rib or the whole flange.
My first time doing any fabric.

Hi Keith !

Just on the edges (open side) - the idea is to stop any
sharp edges from cutting into the fabric over time.

Don't forget to stick the polyester batting over the
whole leading edge before putting the fabric on. This is
loosely matted fabric about 1/2" thick available at most fabric stores.
It sticks on with a bit of Poly-Tack. It will cover rivet heads
& edges, providing a bit of cushioning, and squeezes down to almost
nothing as the fabric shrinks. It lets air and gases out of the
back of the fabric to give a smooth job. If you put fabric over
metal without it, the evaporating solvents will make ugly
bubbles under the fabric !

edge? Is this also needed on the bottom of the leading
edge? This fabric work is all new to me.

I read in the Poly-fiber manual about the batting but
there was nothing in the Murphy manual so I figured it
wasn't needed. Learn something new everyday

Advice seems to conflict a bit on the batting. I did not use it and I
did have to spend some time filling pinholes with a brush on the leading
edges. It took a couple of coats to get them all. The pin holes were
simply voids or hollows between the weave of the cloth. Spray coats of
polybrush were not really effective at filling them. However the
covering manual also suggests putting a coat of polybrush on the bare
aluminumum before covering it. I'm guessing that would have cut down on
the pinholes although I wonder if it would interfere at all with the
shrinking process as the fabric tries to glue itself to the polybrush
when it was heated. If there is a next time I'll be trying the batting
or the precoat of polybrush.

Kind of you to offer but I think covering is one thing that can look
pretty ugly and still be structurally 100% so I don't feel the need to
get it perfect ;)

Actually mine would look better if I'd bought a roll of 3" tape for the
trailing edge instead of cutting my own like MAM's manual suggested.
Between the creases and the rough (somewhat frayed) edges it wasn't
worth saving a few $$.

I don't know when it disappeared from the
Murphy manual, or why, because it IS necessary to
use the batting. It should cover all of the metal
of the leading edge, and overlap the edges by 1/4"
or so.....

We all had to learn the joys of fabric -
but it's easy, (and easy to fix if you don't get
it right the first time ;-) ). Have fun !

In the manual there's like one sentence about covering the flaperon leading
edge as an option. No explanation or reasoning. Just more or less a blip, like
it's a well known process.

I did a search for some feedback on covering the Rebel flapperons and happily
found some references to a step or two that is not detailed in the murphy
instructions. My question is that, although quite proficient at covering large
model wings, some of the terms relating to the full scale covering are new to
me.

Has anyone on here detailed step by step the covering process? I'm not
worried about getting it done, just about forgetting something that I should
have done that was not explained in the build manual.
