Wing construction question; Are the flapperons needed

Hello everyone,

My wife is in the Army and we are getting transfered
to Hawaii. We have only been back in the states for a
couple of years and all I have gotten completed on my
Rebel is the tail group and the flapperons. I have not
covered the flapperons yet but am trying to get it
done before we leave. We report 17 March 04.

I am hauling my work table and most of the kit up to
my farm later this month. But I would like to take the
wing kit to Hawaii to build.

Can the wings be built and closed without the
flapperons? Can they be put on at a later date? I
would rather leave the flapperons here then ship them.
I have had enough bad experiences with movers to guess
that if anything was to get damaged it would probably
be the flapperons. To much work in them to have them
damaged. I have been reading the manual and it seems
that they are needed. I'll bite my tongue on comments
about the manual.

Thanks,
Keith Leitch

Yes, the wings can be built without the flaperons. Yes, they will be put on
later, much later. And NO don't move anything you don't have to, guaranteed it
will get dented. Have fun on the Islands.

If you install the solid/well threaded one lug anchor nuts I have been
recommending, for attachment of the aileron/flap hinges, there is no need to
have the control surfaces along with you.

Just in case you are scratching your head about the answers you received
I'll add a bit. It seems that there is often not enough clearance
between the top wing skin and the flaperon. After the wing is built you
can bend the top skin up a bit like the manual suggests. In my case I
trimmed the skin a bit instead of bending it. You can also adjust the
vertical position of the hinge line a bit by putting spacers under the
top bolt of the flaperon brackets. I imagine that Wayne means that with
the anchor nuts inside the wing you can still do that after the wing is
closed. You don't need the anchor nuts on the outboard flap hinge since
you can still get access to that one. Another thing thing that helps a
bit is to dimple and use countersunk avex rivets in the 3 or 4 holes on
each rib of the flaperon that might otherwise hit the trailing edge of
the top wing skin.

Bottom line is the same though - don't take the flaperons to Hawaii. but
you should probably take the flaperon hinge brackets regardless as they
might help you pack the completed wings securely for the return trip.

enjoy the sunshine...
Ken
