Has anyone had any experience with the Vertex vxa 700 hand held radio? Which
hand held works best with a portable or permanent intercom system?

I use a Yaesu Aviator handheld mounted to the panel of my Christavia with a
PS Engineering portable
intercom and it's a great setup. Don't ever think about buying a Yaesu with
the VOR cabability though.
The VOR feature doesn't work in a moving vehicle...that's right doesn't work
in a moving vehicle.
Scott Henderson, the North American sales manager will deny it though and
states that if you are
unsatisfied with one of their products, you should return it to your point
of purchase and upgrade to
a different unit.

Handheld radio

Hi Allen !

We ran an Icom handheld, with VOR (seldom used), with a
portable intercom, in the first Rebel, for over 10 years -
worked like a charm ! The VOR worked well, as did the extra
weather frequency - apparently things that don't work on some
Yaesu's ... Aviation Consumer magazine says "Pay the extra
for the Icom - it's worth it !" I think the A-23 is the best
choice ...

We had a plastic 'pocket' for the Icom on the panel, making
it easy to pop out & take home. The intercom was fastened to a bracket
on the roof, behind the seats in the center. This keeps the cables
behind you, and out of the way. We added a 3 way lighter plug,
to power the radio, intercom, and a Loran, later replaced with a
portable GPS, so we could leave the power cords unmodified, making
it easier to move the radio, etc. between aircraft (we were a
4 airplane family for at least those 10 years :-) )

The Murphy factory used Icoms in ALL of their aircraft,
until they moved to panel mounts, and now use Appollo stuff - I
like their panel mount GPS display, MUCH better than Bendix-King !!
Probably would still prefer to go with a portable GPS, though,
as that technology is still improving very quickly, and hand-held
is much less expensive. Also, it's nice to be able to take the
unit back to the hotel or tent in the evening, to program the
next day's leg(s)...
