Rebel tail wheel spring

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:53 am

I'm of course with Rick Ian, and that's why there are pictures in the
archives of the 3 leaf I use..how to cut it and some pics of it when I was
mounting to Charles Dixon's rebel from Mississippi.

As for the side to side this seems to be what kills everyone that I've had
in here. Once they can move side to side it becomes a pry bar once off
center and beats the hell out of the tail. You don't need to make new
retainer parts, just take some appropriate thickness of alum cut to the
thickness of the tail spring and long enough that you can bend a tab each
side of the retainer width and make a shim for each side of the spring.
Might need a couple on one side, but get it so all play is taken out by
using enough shims or thickness sufficient. Also important to have no
up/down movement of any kind at the retainer at all.

Wayne

G'day

I have just noticed that my tail wheel spring has some sideways movement
and
is rocking just a little on
the centre bolt. My attention was drawn to this by a squeaking noise when
I
was moving the Rebel .

There are also two popped rivets on opposite sides of the tail cone.

I have done the Wayne fix to the tail cone and there does not appear to be
any other damage or cracking.

I am using the standard Murphy aluminium spring and tailwheel as supplied
in
the kit.

I would appreciate some advice on how best to fix this.

Thanks and regards
