Moose Tail Mods - Finlets for float operations
Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am
Warren,
I have the finletts and the ventral fin. I like having both, the airplane
did fine with just the ventral fin but is more stable with both. MAM has a
kit for the finletts but no installation instructions. I bought the kit and
riveted the finletts to the horizontal stab using flush rivets 3 rows, 1.25
pitch (way over kill). Nutplates are a better answer, but I would add a
doubler on the inside of the end rib while it's open. I do know, without the
ventral fin and finletts the airplane has a lot of adverse yaw and the nose
is always moving around.

Subject: Moose Tail Mods - Finlets for float operations
*-------------------------------------------------------------------------*There was discussion some time ago about finlets but I can find little
in the archives.
I'm just doing mods to the tail so would like to incorporate flush
anchor nuts to accommodate future installation.
BTW it took me only four hours to 'completely' de-rivet the elevator
thanks to the suggestion of using a spring punch to drive the mandrel
(I'm converting to flush rivets as the tail is the only section I hadn't
dimpled and the mushroom rivets have always nagged me) I ground a bolt
to replace one punch end as I didn't want to destroy punch. Thanks again
for the tip.
Q. Are the finlets needed?
Q. Mount to stab spade or elevator?
Q. Material, size/pattern, number/size of screws?
In regards to Bruces question would also appreciate an outline of all
MAM/Builder mods required for stab and Elev so I don't miss something.
(building twice is bad enough)!
Welcome Bruce, the 3500 mod manual should cover it and is available on
MAMs site. Also Mike put the CD manual in the archives which I
downloaded last night but you need high speed as it's about 74mb. Took
me about 45 min for it to travel over here, not bad. Mike also posted
pics of the end rib doubler in the archives.
I 'think' the full length st403 is a builder mod which I also plan. The
factory plane had a harmonic interference from an unbalanced 514 blade
mounted to their M14 which prompted the full length. Someone correct me
if I'm wrong.

*-------------------------------------------------------------------------*Hi Folks: The tail kit for my Moose came last week.
I picked it up and inventoried the crate. Looks like
I'm missing the two 12' long rear spar doublers (st-403 ??).
I started putting the Horz Stab skeleton together, All
when well until I needed the rear spar doubler. I also
don't see in the plans or Mods where they call out for the
"end rib/hinge doubler"
Where did you all find out you needed this and will there
be any other mods (surprises) I'll need to make/know that
aren't in the manual and the mod booklet?
