Hi Walter I hope you can help me out, looking for easy fuel with two float planes. Planning fishing trip up coast line to Queen Charlotte and hoping to find easy fueling spots. Prefer to stay away from control zones!!!! from Pitt Meadows to Vancouver to many flight levels.THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Actually, it's pretty easy to get around Vancouver in a
floatplane, because you can safely fly low enough (2500 ASL)
without having to call up a controller. The wheel guys get a
little nervous when flying across to Vancouver Island at that
altitude. And with a map, it is easy to stay out of the control
zones and get to where you are going. If you give me more
specifics about your route, and comfortable fuel range, I can
give you more directions about where to go.

But if you are coming from the Okanagan to Vancouver first, and
if you need fuel here, I would recommend Fort Langley. No control
zone and a popular float plane base here. Then as you follow the
coast north, there are lots of places to fuel up until you get to
the top of Vancouver Island. Campbell River and Port McNeill are
good choices. After that you need to pick your spots and
alternates quite carefully. You will probably want to stop at
Bella Bella and then Prince Rupert before crossing over to the
Charlottes. If you don't have it yet, get a copy of the Canada
Water Aerodrome Supplement. It lists all the places you can get
fuel and what kind, although I have only seen Avgas at float
plane bases around here. And of course some good maps. A GPS
really helps, too, as all the islands and inlets tend to look
alike if you have to fly low in bad weather.

As for getting mogas elsewhere or at marinas, I haven't had any
luck there. I had one marina actually refuse me fuel in the
middle of nowhere because they didn't want it used in airplanes.
Also, because of the tides, their docks are all full of pylons,
making it very difficult to manoeuvre with wings.

Great fishing in the Charlottes alright. I caught a 49 pound
halibut there one year along with a zillion coho, and some nice
springs.
