wheel well plates on 1800 amphib floats

Christmas Greetings!

I'm getting close to finishing the first of our 1800 amphib floats.
For the life of me, I can't figure out what purpose wheel well plates
serve, except making it hard to do maintenance. (See MAM's "Directions"
Chapter 6, page 9, figure 6.8.1) Any comments or suggestions?

You should probably ask MAM, but my guess it that they provide
for smoother water flow behind the step which then would reduce
drag and shorten water take-offs. It hasn't been a problem with
maintenance on mine, as I go through the top for greasing and any
work on the suspension. I take the whole wheel off if any work is
necessary on them or the brakes.

Well I doubt that they do very much but I installed them anyway. It makes
it neccessary to remove the wheel if any maintenance is needed but with my
fat hands I'd probably need to take the wheel off anyway. Other than
chasing hydraulic leaks theres not much to maintain. It's possible they're
there to prevent a large inrush of water hitting the bulkhead when landing.
