MOOSE- Elevator "V" cutout dimensions/more ?

Post by Wes & Bobbi Jo Erb » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:07 am

Brad, FWIW the dimensions off my QB kit (SR208) as delivered were 3 3/4" at
the root and 14 1/8" at the trailing edge.

Brad, my measurement of 14 1/8 was an approximation using two carpenters
squares since the rudder was in the way!. 14 1/4" is till too tight and
the
important place to measure is the root end where the too tight width is
just
shy of 3" and you need to open this up by trimming back to the rivet holes
to get 3 3/4" os so to give lots of clearance around the fin post (and
more
rudder travel to boot!

As for the intersecting EL450's just make the "V" area one full length and
the diagonal one just trim it off before it hits the "V' one. Maybe even
be
creative and trim the end of the diagonal one with a bent tab so you can
tie
it to the full length EL450 for a little more strength.

Thanks everyone, but I still have more questions. The opening at the
large
end is 14 1/4. There are two EL450's one is the end for the V and the
other is
the diagnal that comes to meet it. If I follow the prepunched holes in
the
skin
and continue the lines out to the tailing edge of the skin they are 1/4
inch
apart(center line to center line). If I centered the holes in both ribs
they
would hit. If I cut the opening larger and remove the line of
prepunched
holes(edge of V) it will make the 450's intersect before they get to the
trailing
edge.

Thanks, Brad

MOOSE- Elevator "V" cutout dimensions/more ?

Post by Nielsenbe » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:07 am

Thanks Wayne, The root end on mine is about 3 5/8 depending on how you
measure the radius. The measurement at the first rivit hole foward the root is an
opening of 3 7/8. I guess they just changed the angle of the cutout?? Thanks
for all the help.

Brad

MOOSE- Elevator "V" cutout dimensions/more ?

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:07 am

Yep, sounds like they changed the cutout angle and you are good to go! Like
I said the root dimension is the important one, to insure that it's out wide
enough to clear the double .063 spar caps on the outside of the fin rear
post. Guys that have the old 3" dimension will have to trim it evenly right
back to the trailing edge (and keep the same angle) to get rid of the
prepunched pilot holes (and this will give some more clearance for a little
more rudder travel as well .....for those tight turns on skis!)
