an exhaust system (orig. for C172)

BRAND NEW, in the shipping crate !!

Price very flexible (check the current prices ....)

David Qualley

Super Rebel Engine

Post by David Qualley » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:56 pm

I knew it would come to this someday! I have to make the big choice,
and cough up some more $$.

I just came across an O-540, 260hp engine that is about to be
overhauled. Ken Vike in Kamloops, BC will be the doing the overhaul,
I've had him recommended to me on a couple of separate occasions
recently. I also saw his latest overhaul yesterday. If I wasn't told
it was an overhaul, I would swear that the engine was brand new.

The price is $28,000 Canadian.. Compared to all the other quotes I have
this is an excellent price! It includes all the accessories, except a
vacuum pump. It will come with the pre-overhaul starter and alternator,
but they recommended getting rid of them, and using lighter and cheaper
automotive ones instead in a homebuilt..

The engine I saw yesterday was built for another local Super Rebel
owner, who passed my name along.

Not knowing a whole lot about engines so far.. My big question is..
What other questions should I be asking, or things should I be looking
for before I plunk the big $$ down?

Thanks!
Dave

Hi David! Nobody seems to be answering you so I'll throw in the only
experience I have to date, with an overhauled Lyco 540.

Dr. Rob Helt was/is/maybe looking for an IO-540 300 H.P. for his SR2500. I
had Leavens Aviation track down a good "core" and then asked them about
getting a guaranteed price for the finished O/Haul like I did with my
O-320's. They couldn't commit to a price on the overhaul, but I was told
absolute worse case would be about $24,000 Cdn. The wide block core they
tracked down was going to be $10,000 U.S ($15,000 CDN) so totally might have
been around $39,000 CDN. We passed for the time being, as we were told the
core was $10,000 and then when we were going to go ahead, we were told "Oh,
didn't I tell you that the core was U.S. $'s"! Just a $5000 suprise, but
enough to piss you off and get you looking elsewhere! (although my
experience with Leavens engine overhauls is EXCELLENT!)

If you are happy going 260 H.P. and the guy doing the overhaul is reputable
and will back his overhaul with some kind of warrenty, I personally think
that $26,000 is one he-- of a deal!

Anyone else out there bought a O-540 yet?? What did it set you back? Was if
overhauled or "as removed"?

Blue skies,
Wayne G. O'Shea
