Wing Mounting - MOOSE

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:01 am

Here are clips from previous email exchanges with Brian G. on the wing
attachment for the 3500 MOOSE only! (does not apply to the SR2500)

I have clipped out the personal stuff and left in the information pertaining
to the rear attach floating and the need to likely mill down the steel
bushing that goes into the front wing attach fittings.

I would highly suggest putting the wing in place, without this bushing
installed, to take measurements of the space left and then machine it to the
correct width. Once it's pressed into the spar fittings I wouldn't want to
be taking it back out!

Cheers,
Wayne

The initial 3500 upgrades were shipped out with too many FUS-513's as
somebody thought that these were also used on the fuselage. You require one
W-513 and one W-514 per rear spar.
Unique to the 3500 hundred is the fact that the rear spar fittings FLOAT.
That is, it is our only high wing where the rear spar fittings are not
bolted up tight, but there is a gap between the wing fittings and the
fuselage fittings.
The stress analyst told me this was structurally important.
You should have only four W-719's. One on each wing, and one on each
fuselage lift strut fitting top bolt. These are there to prevent cracking
under extreme loading, where these fittings will try to pull forward,
bending around the bolt.
Hope this helps,
Brian

Thanks for the quick reply Brian!!!

As for the Fus-513's I had a feeling the extra 4 were thought to be for the
fuselage rear attach, as that is how the earlier Rebel kits were shipped
using the same fittings until someone realized that it wasn't a great fit
and MAM made the FUS-69's (I think that's the number) for the job. I was
just playing with everything I had and trying different sets to see how they
fit together.

I assume then that this approximate 0.1375 of play at the back fitting
should have the wing attach fittings centered between the Fus-706's when the
front spar fittings are tightened up with the required spacers. Mind you
that is something I haven't measured. Are the new fittings on the front spar
with the steel bushings installed into the W709 and 710 the proper width to
fill the gap now that the FUS-701's have been installed inside the
carrythrough tube, or do you still need spacers?

I know you are swamped out there with work, but might be good idea to add
this floating rear spar fitting information to the 3500 upgrade instructions
or you know that the bolt will get tightened until the FUS-706's pull in
tight to the FUS-513/514 fittings. Even I would have tightened it up tight,
with spacers, assuming that the rigidity of the wing adds to the strength of
the cabin between front and rear attach and would never have thought to
leave it floating. Guess that's part of the reason for the extra brace on
the front cabin carrythrough! Also in the instructions there is no mention
of the steel bushings being installed into the front wing attach fittings
W709 and 710. I just wondered what the package of 4 steel bushings was for
and scoured the pictures to notice that one is shown in the front fitting in
the shot showing "no rivets in this area until strap is installed". I
presume one goes in from the front and one from rear on these fittings.

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,
Actually the steel bushings are slightly too big (the flange is slightly too
thick), and the flange on the front one may need milling down to get the
wing to fit. This sets the position of the rear fittings, which do indeed go
between the fuselage fittings.
Maybe should add that stuff to the instructions.
Thanks,
Brian
