Elite Oil Canning Corner Wraps Etc., was: Re: Elite cage riv

I don't like correcting people (ok I just heard you all say ya right!);o),
but the proper/original corner wraps for the lower forward carry through to
firewall postion are not FUS-10's. They are FUS-70's which are .025 material
and have been this way since 1992/3 for the Rebel. The .020 x FUS-10's are
designated for the 4 corners behind the cabin that join to the tail cone on
the Rebel and the top 2 corners of the CT to firewall. I suspect this holds
true for the Elite as well and I understood from previous posts that the
lower wraps being supplied with the Elite were indeed FUS-452's of .032.

That all said I also like to use FUS-70's on the rear cabin to tailcone top
two, as these take a lot of compression/buckling load in a hard three point
landing. I have replace many .020 FUS-10's in this area on customers
airplanes (doing a pair right now), that have caved in. Mine have never
given in and I know by know they sure would have if I hadn't of accidently
installed the wrong (heavier) FUS-70's there when I was building this area
in 1994!

Sean has the right idea with the angles tieing the mounts to the
carrythrough. Every structural AME that has ever looked inside mine has
questioned why there isn't a channed running from the carrythrough to the
motormounts x 4 for this exact reason.

I don't yet know whether the trike Elte is OK, as I haven't finished it,
but
it is certainly very much better than the taildragger kit, which uses
FUS-10
corner wraps fore and aft. All four front corner wraps on the trike
version
are 0.032", vs. 0.022" on the taildragger. The part number is FUS-452.
You
can see that the trike would need more stiffness in the firewall area.
When
I say Sean was rocking the airplane by the tail stinger, I mean the pipe
that normally supports the tailwheel. This had been left on the amphib to
facilitate ground handling. And it was the lower NOSE corner wraps that
oilcanned, due the the weight of the engine deforming the lower firewall.
As a retrofit, Sean had fitted about 1.25x1.25 aliminum angle on the
outside
of the forward floor, with the front end tied to the lower engine mounts
and
the rear end to the 2x2 lower cage, which helped a lot.

I have photos of my forward floor which I will forward you direct, as I've
long since forgotten my passwaord to access the archive area! It is no
doubt a little heavier, but certainly stiffens up the whole area aft of
the
engine mounts, and gives a real solid base for the rudder pedals. Plus
the
floor is nice and flat if you want to put carpet or whatever down.

Regards, Al
