Hi
Does anyone have, or know where I can find, info on engine dimensions for a
conical mount 0-235 or 0-320 so I can reference my engine position to a
Lycoming
engine mount. I don't even know if the crankshaft is centrally located to
the
four conical mount positions on the Lycomings.

Or, even better, has anyone seen any references on where to locate the
propellor or thrust line for the Rebel? Perhaps newer manuals give some
info??

I am trying to do an engine mount for a Subaroo Ej22 and you guys always
seem to
leave the cowl on your engines so I can't take measurements!

Hello All

Bought an engine mount from MAM for my 0-320 A2B.The bottom attach points to
the engine require a 3/16" washer between the mount and the rubber so that
the mount does not rub the coupling on the intake pipe.This also requires
the same thickness washers on the top mount points to keep everything
equal.The bottom holes are 1/4" to close together. There is no play in the
mount at the bottom.The top attach points also require some pressure to make
them line up.It seems to me that this puts undo stress on the mount before
you even get going.Yes I have hung the engine on the plane but this doesn't
seem right to me.

How does everyone elses mount fit? I think I should ask MAM for another
mount.

Help me out here please.

Yes, Murray, I had the same with my conical mount.
After running for some time, I ended up with less
washer on top than bottom to compensate for some lag in
the rubber mounts. The only slight problem was keeping
everything lined up with the cowl and spinner. Putting
in a washer will increase your gap. And you may want to
anticipate that eventual lag/droop if you want your
spinner/cowl to stay lined up perfectly.

Also, that pressure to line up the top mounts is no
problem. Once the engine is hanging, everything fits
nicely with the rubber mounts.

I have the same engine and mount as you do, although I have not gotten to
the point of trying to mate them. I did put a ruler across the attach
points -- 11 1/8" across the top and 11 5/16" across the bottom.

Also, depending on which "lord" mounts you have the rubber is moulded offset
(ie the bolt holes is not in the center) so you can rotate the rubber
bushings until the hole matches the mount the best you can.

The need for a thick washer is the norm with the Conical mount as MAM put
the lower tubes too close to the rear intake tube couplings (and once you
have a jig you just keep plugging out the same thing!). Make sure you have
the hose clamp tightener gear on the forward side otherwise it will hold the
engine nose up off the mount or rub through the mount tube. If you ever see
my Rebel this will explain the unever gap behind my spinner. I had my entire
cowling constructed before I had asked an AME friend of mine to do an
unbiased inspection of my engine installation and the only thing he found
was "you might want to spin those hose clamps 180* so there are not hitting
your mount". When I turned them the motor dropped!

Hi Murray,

MY engine mount for an 0320 E2D from MAM lined up perfectly. If you had to
use a lot of force to get it to line up, I might be suspicious too. Did you
space your engine mounts correctly? Maybe a call to Brian at MAM would be a good
Idea. What type of mount is it for an A2B?

Make sure you make an allowance, like Walter said, for the engine sagging on
its mounts, as they break in, or your spinner will not line up with your cowl
any more. You can see a number of planes at airshows where guys lined up their
spinners and cowling only to end up having the spinners set 3/8" below the
cowling, to the chagrin of many a builder.

Hi Grant two friends who have a Bushmaster-0-360 that does not move and a
Sportsman 2+2 does not move. The two AME that I know feel the mount flexes
too much on both bottom legs,they feel the flex will cause cracking. I also
have a friend with a Rebel with 0-320 with conical mount that does move
very very little if any.

Hi Wayne I believe I called you about 4 1/2 years ago about firewall. I did
beef up firewall with doublers or should I say stiffeners back to back on
top of firewall and doublers on mounts riveted too witches hat,doublers on
floor .Also put in float bars from overhead cage to firewall stiffeners. I
built my Rebel with .032 corner wraps from firewall back to baggage
dept..The only problem I have had is rivets in door hinge on cage smoking ,I
have went up one size larger and longer and seems to be working fine. About
motor mount when I mention the movement to the two AME I know they say it
should not move or flex like that so I always have that question in the back
of my mind that there is something wrong.A friend of mine with a Rebel with
a conical mount 0-320 engine does not move. THANKS jerry

Ditto! I can move my motor up and down and at the spinner center I see
about
5/8 movement. If it didn't move, something would break! (I could move the
O-470 on my C182 around a lot more than that!!)

Jerry, wasn't it you that called me close to a year back about your
firewall
moving around? and I suggested that you had too much "umph" on the nose of
that Rebel? Especially considering it didn't sound like you had any
reinforcement plates on the firewall. MAM's Elite style or "others" that
are
available.

Hi again Wayne: my is a dynafocal,purchased from Murphy, I feel the rubber
mounts are to soft but do not really know, but the amount of movement sounds
about the same as yours.I hope it is okay I guess I'm looking for peace of
mind on movement,have about 400 hrs now and keep on checking for cracks in

Sounds like you did what you should. I must be thinking of someone else

had their firewall loosening off etc that was also flying an O-360 on
straight floats out there in BC.

I've never checked to see whether the tubes are flexing, the rubbers or

have you on mine. It's always been this way from the day I installed the
original O-235 to today with the O-320. 8 years later and it hasn't fallen
off or got any worse! Mine is a Conical mount! Is yours Conical or
Dynafocal??

Ditto! I can move my motor up and down and at the spinner center I see

5/8 movement. If it didn't move, something would break! (I could move
the
O-470 on my C182 around a lot more than that!!)

Jerry, wasn't it you that called me close to a year back about your
firewall
moving around? and I suggested that you had too much "umph" on the
nose
of
that Rebel? Especially considering it didn't sound like you had any
reinforcement plates on the firewall. MAM's Elite style or "others"
that
are
available.

Just out of curiosity do you know of any mounts that don't flex?
Where exactly is your mount flexing, and under what conditions is it flexing.
