I doubt that it's a warp drive prop. The Swearingen SX300 is a fast glass
plane that uses 6 cylinder lycoming or continental and a constant speed
prop IIRC. I believe they race these planes at Reno.

I just checked the registration and the engine is an IO-540 lycoming. I
can't imagine this plane using a fixed pitch prop. This plane was flying
since 1989.

It would take ten of my little three-bladed Warp Drive props to pay for
that one. That is either a Hoffmann or MT, but a costly piece of work
regardless. Still I think Warp Drive should be limited to Legacy
engines(like mine) or no bigger than 150 hp. Geert Frank

Hey Drew,

Just goes to prove the point that "a little knowledge is a dangerous
thing". At least in my hands! Incident just sounded too much like
confirming the gossip I'd heard, so I wrote. Hope it didn't upset
anybody. I didn't think to look further into the registration, and I
didn't know what a Swearingen is/was.

Hi Guys,

I did some looking on the SX300 web page after hearing of the blade
separation and found the ad below. If the owner of the downed SX300 was Mark
Bratton (N301SX) then the ad sheds some light on the blades he most likely
was flying.

Aluminum Prop Blades. They have 600 hours and are in good shape. $1000.00
each and I will pay the freight. I have a carbon blade prop designed by
Steve Hill, so I no longer need the aluminum blades. Call Mark Bratton at

Hey Brian
I wasn't upset in fact I'm glad others are looking out for us. If you've
heard of a warp drive prop shedding a blade I'd like to know about it. It
seems to me that these props maintain a lot of strength with cracks in the
blade root because I haven't heard of anyone losing a blade yet even with
the history of cracks. It also reminds me to do a good preflight on my
prop. How's the windsor Rebel project coming along?

Hey Drew,

No, I too have not heard of an actual separation of a Warp blade, just
their fatigue problems with the aero-engines, and Warps statement that
no more props would be sold to planes powered with those. But of
course that IS why I wrote the OP, as I wondered if this one on the
Swearingen was a "first".

It's kind of funny how I stumbled onto the report, as I was actually
looking to see if there was a report about the fatality Hughes 1-B
that crashed in Yellowstone Park on the return from Oshkosh, and
something about the Swearingen made me "link" it. I was not actually
looking for prop failures. A really nice part was that with quick
scanning of the lists, I saw nothing about any Rebels or Elites, but
lots and lots of 210's and Lancairs. Surprised me. About the
Lancairs I mean.

What with my moving to Bothwell and putting up a new shop and all, I
haven't been helping out with the Rebel of late. But stopping by one
day in late October to pick-up my portable air-tank, I was amazed to
see they are STILL f***ing around with the fuel tanks, and very slight
apparent progress on other stuff. But of course, the devil is in the
details, isn't it? I thought last January that the targeted/hoped
for roll-out in time to get in the flight hours and then go for
Oshkosh 2003 was a bit optimistic, but right now I wouldn't place a
bet on Oshkosh 2004!! Ah well, as a good friend says (not about
planes) "Hey what's the rush. When I get this one done, I'll just
have to start another one!!" Guess that's true, eh?
