Carb heat muff

I put mine where ever they would fit on a straight run. The longer heat
muffs are for cabin heat and you want clean forced air. The heat muff with
the 3/4" slot for carb heat will get plenty of warm air inside the engine
cowl. IMHO, save the forced air for cooling the cylinders when ever you can.

Is there some reason why we shouldn't have forced air input to the carb
heat muff ? With my cross-over exhaust system I purchased from MAMA
there are 3 heat muffs, 2 longer ones with an input and output flange
and 1 smaller muff with a 3/4" opening along the length instead of an
input flange. Where should they be placed?
My guess is to put the longer muffs in front of the engine around the
cross-overs (maybe joined together for more heat) for cabin heat and the
smaller opened heat muff on one of the tail pipes for carb heat. Thanks
again.

I haven't seen the MAM unit but generally you don't need forced air to the
carb heat muff because it sucks the air in itself.

Carb heat muff

I have the carb heat muff (with only one outlet) on the front
cross over pipe, and the other 2 are used for cabin heat mounted
on the tail pipes, but not on the back end, as far to the front
as possible. The air from the forward baffle area is fed in
through the inlet on one side and then out to the inlet on the
other side, and from there to the cabin heat box. That way you
have 2 pipes providing heat instead of one, and in my opinion you
need it. I barely get enough heat from both, and would think that
one would be insufficient. Be very careful to check frequently
for cracks or corrosion in this area, as you don't want carbon
monoxide in your cabin.

Hi Clay !

I would suspect that the one with the long intake is
for carb heat, and usually goes up front on one of the
crossovers.

Some folks put the longer ones on the tail end of the
pipes - don't really like that, as it adds weight way
back there
that is hard on the pipe joints. Maybe you can get
them on somewhere
further forward...

Carb heat muff

Clay:

I have the MAM exhaust pipes. I put the long cabin heat muff on at the front
pipe at the front and the carb heat muff on the crossover pipe right behind
the other. They are touching each other but not jammed together. No room for
the other cabin heat muff. At -10* you stay comfortably warm.Don't forget to
put a screen over the carb heat muff to keep the mice out.(tip from Wayne)

Good luck
Murray

That sounds about right Clay. The small heat muff with the slit is for the
carb and is not forced air. The two flanged muffs can be connected to scat tube
and routed to the forward baffle and another flange. location of the heat muff
on my cross over was pretty much as you described.
