Door design

Al:

I have the standard rebel door with one latch to hold closed. I put a foam
seal around the edge. Of course I've only flown under 2 hrs. but it is tight
, no air noise, no rattling. With the fairing on the strut , the door
becomes a little restricted but not to bad. So far I would do the same over
again.Visibility is great.

Good Luck

Gentlemen:

I would appreciate hearing the views of the group on what seem to be the
main door design options for the Rebel - centre hinged one piece, or top
hinged two piece. No doubt, both have pros and cons. I'm getting near
the point I have to make that decision.

Well, sounds like the voting is strongly in favour of the stock door, with
perhaps some latch mods. One change I have made already (per Sean White's
suggestion) is to use extruded hinge material in place of the stock wrap
around stuff. It provides a much stronger hinge, and it sure seems it
wouldn't take much force on the door to rip the standard stuff apart, given
the length of the door. It also provides a little more metal for the rivets
to grip if, like me, you drilled the rivet line down the centre of the
upright, as specified in the instructions, rather than thinking ahead and
offsetting it towards the door.

The extruded material is, however, much more expensive. Anybody looking to
go this way, I have enough material left over for at least one more set of
doors.

Hi Al !

For most, the standard door/window works great ...
you might want to re-arrange the latch setup, though. Several
have gone to one latch at the top center of the window, but with
the mechanism mounted in the wing root, with the pin extending
downward. Keeps things a lot tidier ...

You can fly with one or both windows open on really
hot days, and still read a map without it blowing away !

Swing up doors add a LOT of time to the building, and
can be a mixed blessing - really only handy for floats, and
even there, the standard doors work OK.

You can always change it later - "Get it FLYING - it'll
never be FINISHED" !!! :-) ;-) ======

Just standard stock doors and latches on mine, and am happy with

which is nice when you are on floats.

Murray,

I've never had a problem with the single MAM stock door latch, opening up at
the front top corner in cruise, like some have reported. Unless I wanted a top
hinged door or just didn't like the location of the lock in the window I
would not change it.

Some of us just like to invent a better wheel. Or the Engineer type like
building so much they spend hours designing a better mouse trap. although I have
to admit, I've seen some door latches on a few Rebels that made me drool with
envy.

Murray,

A very simple way to hold the door open while loading is to buy two marine
hatch door springs and mounting bracket. I saw a Rebel at the Arlington MAM
booth last summer that used them like a strut to hold the door open. It was very
clever. Maybe you saw it. They work very well by the way.

Al,

The MAM design works fine. If you don't mind spending more time redesigning
and building it different, you can probably improve it a bit, as some have
done. How bad do you want to fly?

Some guys like the top hinge for easier access on floats although the stock
works fine for that too.

I have had a few inspectors say the MAM design should have a latch on the
outside for opening the door in case of an emergency. Then someone trying to
extract your unconscious body from the wreckage can open the door from the outside
and get you out, quickly.

It's a good point. I always figured the door is really flimsy enough to
simple pry the top of the door out, to get your fingers in, and there would be no
problem ripping the whole thing off the airframe. But that might not be so
obvious to someone that didn't build it!

The door frame can also become twisted and stuck into the airframe at post
crash and will not be possible to open. This is why it is good practice, and
should be a part of your emergency check list, to unlatch the doors in a forced
landing.

I went with the murphy design. I find it works fine on wheels and floats. If
you decide to top hinge your door you'll have to redesign the bottom front
corner to clear the strut and shrink the door opening. It's really nice to
be able to open the window on a hot day and stick your elbow out in the
breeze.

I like the interior handle that was on the Moose demo, this is not what
I have in my cave of parts which I believe is a 'micky mouse' tab
arrangement. (is that why it's called a better mouse/moose trap Bruce?)
Looks like something off a rice burner, anyone have details? If I could
get a nickle for every mouse hide I'd have my plane paid for.
