Hi guys:

I am joining you from Yellowknife. I just bought a completed Rebel,
499R. Will have it here in YK in less than a week. I have already
talked to Wayne on the phone and he has directed me here.

I just found out that the previous owners did not hook up the flaps,
all is done except the cable and handle was not installed(they flew it
around for the past 4 years without flaps!). The previous owner told me
that there was too much play in the assembly and they had heard about a
electric solution by using a car electric window opener and where
planning on installing this type of system. Does anyone know of a
similar system.

The main reason I got hold of Wayne was to find information on a third
seat for the Rebel. I talked to Murphy and they quoted me $900.00 for a
seat and rails. Wayne said he paid $700.00 for two seats years ago. Is
it possible for the price to go up over 100%. I am looking for ideas
for a third seat for the Rebel. Brian at Murphy suggested I use a 5
point harness for the third seat.

I can't wait to get the Rebel up here to give it a good going over. I
will be able to understand what you guys are talking about and put my
two cents worth in.

Thanks Rick, I'll check out the web site.

You must be getting ready for summer. Here in northern canada it is
above normal for this time of year. The only place global warming is
appreciated.

Where would you mount the seat belts for this set-up? Any
pictures?

As for the extra seat, I've seen just a set of
cushions, back &
bottom, that match the front seats, placed on the
floor on the right side
of the baggage area. This has the passenger sitting sideways,
across the fuselage. As long as you have proper seat
belts, this
setup will give lots of head & leg room, while keeping the flap
mixer away from the action. The cushions can be secured with a
couple of strips of Velcro.

Hi Peter !

Welcome to the group !!

I wouldn't worry about the little bit of slop in the
flap setup. I've been flying Rebels since 1990, and have found
that the standard setup - WITH a 45 degree dogleg handle -
works just great, requiring only 2 fingers to raise or lower the
flaps. A little extra time fiddling on the ground can eliminate
most of the play, and the rest can be compensated for by having
a couple of people 'simulate' air loads so you can adjust the
travel to give the desired deflection.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the extra weight,
complexity, and possible jam-ups from electric flaps. (Just MHO)

As for the extra seat, I've seen just a set of cushions, back &
bottom, that match the front seats, placed on the floor on the right side
of the baggage area. This has the passenger sitting sideways,
across the fuselage. As long as you have proper seat belts, this
setup will give lots of head & leg room, while keeping the flap
mixer away from the action. The cushions can be secured with a
couple of strips of Velcro. I believe the factory were considering
this setup to offer as an option, years ago, but never followed
through on it.

Of course, if you really want to go wild, there are at least
5 Rebels that have 4 regular seats installed. Just extend the
seat rails back, & add the seats. This leaves you a bit short on
head & leg room in the back. There was one Rebel with this setup
that regularly carried 4 adults out of a grass strip, and it only
had a Lycoming O-235 engine (100 hp) !

You will love the Rebel !! It's a real joy to fly !!
Tell us a bit about it - what engine, radios, instruments,
landing gear ... ??

Hi Peter Piascik, I have had an electric flapmotor from a Grumman
"Yankee" in my Rebel since 1996. It came with adjustable limitswitches (
max up, max down) and the little thing has never failed me, knocking on
wood hereby.
I have an extra torquetube which drove the flaps and I was of course
limited to 18 degrees flap extension. Only two hinge points on the
original Rebel set-up. I am changing back to flaperons and you can bet I
will use the same motor to drive the flaperon/flaps, anything but that
handle and cable I keep hearing about. I also like to bless my lucky
stars I went to the Subaru Legacy engine, I have no worries about where
and how to place the cooling baffles. Good grief. I would have preferred
to have a 2.5 Liter with 165 HP than the 2.2 I have now installed, 130
HP unless you want to fiddle with the camshafts. Not my cup of tea.
My Grumman flapmotor did not cost $ 500 either I can assure you. I think
I paid $ 100 for the whole shebang. Where is NT?
New Territories? Wow, sounds frigid or am I in the wrong part of the
world? Good luck, you will sometimes need it,
Geert Frank

I have under construction an electric system using the power seat motor from
a '91 Caddie. $50 (Cdn) gets you three motors and two slide assemblies, and
the slides are made of aluminum. You have to add your own limit switches.
Other than that, all you need is one piece of pipe available from Murphy,
and the rest uses standard parts. All the mechanism related to the handle,
wing root pushrods and horns, cable, etc. is gone. I assume you have the
original parts, or did he not include those?

Regards, Al

Hi Peter,

You might consider an aluminum jump seat for a boat. They are inexpensive and
can be bought at a marine store.

Welcome to the list Peter and happy new rebel. I hope you take the time to
fly it a bit before starting renovations. Wayne changed the subject header
to make it easier for people searching the archives in the future. The list
automatically strips attachments because many are still on a slow dial-up
connection. You can post a picture of your plane on the website though. I'd
like to see a picture of your wheel skiis as well I'm working on a set of my
own right now and I gladly steal other peoples ideas wherever I can find
them. It's the sincerest form of flattery you know.

Giday, Bruce. Can you elaborate on the aluminum jump seat for boats, please. Are they a " full bucket" type of
seat or more towards the " lawn chair type". A lad gave me a jump seat from a twin Otter and I used it for the
rear seat of my Christavia but they are hard to come by. Thanks.

Hello Pete

My name is Scott. I just moved to Alaska 1 Aug 2010. I am temporarily in
Sitka till December then not sure where I am moving. I have a flying Rebel
that is tied down at Birchwood. After I leave Sitka I will be bringing the plane
to where ever I will be living. Possibly Soldotna.

My Rebel has been great. Since May I have flown it cross country from Ohio
to Seattle and now Seattle to Anchorage by way of BC and Yukon. Awesome
machine so far. We'll see how it holds up in the bush.
