SR Flap Construction (Flap Mod)

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:54 pm

Are you sure you buddy really put the smiles in Warren?? The SR I have here
has them in all 4 units (flaps/ailerons) thanks to MAM's shear's hold down
clamps damaging the .016 skins.

I can give a hint for those that are doing the SR flap MOD to install a
second floating nut..
Instead of drilling a hole in the skin as called out by MAM (which I did
on one, Sh%t).
Go through access hole forward of spar and drill a hole through spar in
middle. I used a 1/2" Uni step bit
and the resulting hole was slightly oval. Having drilled out holes for
floating nut from outside I used a bit of coat
hanger to guide nut through to inside. At least I'll only have high
speed tape on one flap. :-(. Unfortunately buddy helping out gave a
bunch of smiles to the good flap skin when removing plastic. If hard to
peal, use a heat gun or wife's hair drier.

Was able to do Aileron spade upgrade with scrape material, generally
went okay. Made new weights as per list advise of 1350g each

BTW, The factory holes on ribs for Ail and flaps were slightly out of
alignment on mine. I used a round file to move over and then 5/32
rivets. (for one position only on each rib). Otherwise the trailing edge
will not lie flat. I think this will be clear once you pre fit both
sides of skin with #40 clecos.

Any tips out there on putting the flaps/ailerons together?

- I didn't care much for the "on the bottom of the flap rib - drill a hole
1-5/8" in from the spar" then to insert the spar/ribs in the flap skin and
line up th holes with the first set of predrilled holes. -- At least skip
the outer rib holes so you can get the spar lined up with the skin edges
until you can see where it is at. Maybe a line drawn 1-5/8" fwd of the
predrilled hole for the width of the skin and line things up before
drilling.

- Are there any issues wraping of the leading edge skin around the leading
edge ribs and getting the spar line true?

- Also I rejected my first shot at the 4 holes (1/8") in the flap bushing
because I was worried about the edge distance - and my consistancy was less
than acceptable.

SR Flap Construction (Flap Mod)

Post by Warren Montgomery » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:54 pm

The aileron and one flap were fine. As I recall buddy put a couple of
smiles in removing plastic on the other flap skin. I took over and added
another. (just so he wouldn't feel so bad) Was the worst (or best) I've
seen for bonding. As I recall it was the French supplier that stamps
with red ink. Would have ordered a new skin if I wasn't so far away.
Will replace in the future, maybe....
