Sunday, March 14, 1999

This is just a quick summary, for those of you who missed today's
meeting. :-( ( We missed YOU !! )

Curt Martin and Dave Fife flew in from Michigan on Saturday, so
they wouldn't miss this meeting !! They brought N97M - the 'Builders
Choice Award' winning Rebel from Oshkosh - sporting Dave's new Hoerner
style wing tips.

The new tips look GREAT, and had the 3 way Whelen nav, strobe,
and tail lights mounted on them, on the built-in platform !!

They gave us an update on their VERY detailed & methodical flight
testing of the new (as yet unpainted) tips - good work, fellows !!
They flew about 1 1/2 hours with the old tips, doing take-off, climb,
cruise, stall, and landing tests, with a GPS, then re-fuelled to the
identical level, changed to the new tips, and did the same tests, in
the same order !

The bottom line is: improved performance at both ends of the speed
range (not a lot - about 2 % or so), and a VERY significant reduction
in take-off distance (over 20 % !!) (important for floats !), and improved
feeling of stability at low speeds, appearance & strength, at a very small
increase in weight (about ten thou thicker, but much stronger ...)

The first ten pairs will go for $460US, then the price rises to
$540 - still not too bad. Dave already has orders for EIGHT sets !!!
(Aircrafttips@yahoo.com)

They will be flying N96MR down to Sun 'n Fun, so you can see them
there - and maybe even get a demo ....

Thanks very much for flying up & showing them to us !!

----------------------

Brent Anderson showed us 2 lb. HALON fire extinguishers, with
mounting brackets, that he will sell for $55 each to Rebel Builders.

Halon extinguishers are getting VERY hard to get, and the price is
right !! Brent has about 12 left ....

------------------------

Good new from Rhodes & Williams - Bill Cameron now has obtained
even LOWER insurance rates for us Rebel drivers !!
Like 3% (or LESS) for FULL hull coverage, and $200 - $400 for
$1 Million liability (depending on passenger coverage) !!! Even on
amphibs ! This is a much-simplified policy, making it easier for all.

You can reach Bill at (905) 513-7600 if you are due for insurance
now (or just for an exact quote).

------------------------

Doug Holmes has prepared a detailed index to all of Tony Bengelis'
articles in Sport Aviation, so you can easily find the topics you need. He
has copies available for anyone who needs one.

------------------------

Ron Barber is well along with upgrading his Rebel to an O-320.
He has the O-235-C1 for sale for $6,500 or offer .....

Les McInnis also has an O-235-L2C, with about 55 Hr. SMOH, for
sale for about $14,000. (it's a goodie - Leavens overhaul !)

-----------------------

Bill Tee, one of our resident AIR-ABA Inspectors, was again present
to help out with questions. One involved the fittings for a fuel tank
vent valve, as used on the Cessna Cardinal, being adapted to the Rebel,
and others concerning various fittings & fasteners. Great Help, as usual !
Thanks, Bill !
-----------------------

There were many helpful & useful discussions about Super Rebels,
flight testing, and construction - you just have to be here !
And we DID go for pizza & beer afterwards :-) :-)

----------------------

Thanks to all who attended & contributed !

The NEXT meeting is Sunday, May 16th ** MOVED - to avoid Mother's Day
!!

The Rebel Ramble to Winnipeg is June 26 - July 4th !! This is the
warm-up for next year, when we go back to BC !! Please register NOW,
if you are coming on this Ramble !! Everyone welcome - even if you
don't have a Rebel - we've had everything, from 65 hp. Champs & Taylorcraft,
to Bonanzas & RV-4's !! Invite your friends ....

Thanks !!

Alister,
just to clear up the question on the 20%. We did 3 take offs with the
standard tips, and the same with the new tips. The winds were 12 MPH,
10 degrees of the nose. There were 2 people, 390 lbs, 3/4 fuel. With
the standard tips we averaged 380 ft, with the new tips we averaged
315 ft. While these numbers may be a simple average, I do believe the
new tips made a difference. The pilot was Curt Martin, owner of
N97MR. He is very proficient however, I think with more practice I do
believe the take off distance can be bettered. By the way, these
numbers were without flaps, 0320 engine, a Cessna 172 speed prop and
pulling 2400 RPM's. We will continue to test and maybee find
something else.
The one thing that we feel changed was the stability down final. The
aircraft tracked better and felt better. Maybee we will try with one
person and flaps. The numbers will definitely be different every time.

Dave Fife
