And just for outside amusement, a Subaru EA81 with belt drive will weigh 245 lbs firewall forward
including fluids, rads and ancilliary stuff, exclusive of the engine mount and prop, a Corvair with a
Rinker style gearbox redrive can weigh 252 lbs and a tired Lyc 0235-C might come in at about 245 also.
I'm talking a no bullshit set of numbers here, just actual numbers that have been weighed, verified, etc.,
including all stuff required to run an engine properly like exhaust, carb heat, baffles etc.
Interestingly enough, all three engine combos were flown on the same airframe with the same
Warp Drive ground adjustable pitch prop. I suspect few others can claim or contest accuracy in this division.
Sorry to take the time and bandwidth but there are some real BS stories out there with regards to
what engines really do weigh . Ask most engine experts what their engine actually weighs in a
condition " non other than ready for flight" and you'll see more skating than on a good night watching
the NHL playoffs.

Mike,

The engine weight's for the 0320 can be found on Lycoming web sight.
Depending on the model 0320 you have, they weigh somewhere between 240 and 260 lb.
with alternator, starter and mags. Exhaust, engine mount and all other
accessories are extra lb. Hope that helps somewhat.

The 0320 E2D is one of the lighter engines. The 160 HP versions seem to start
gaining weight.

Great info.
Realistic weights..... wish we would hear about those more often.

My EA-81 came in at 245 also, but firewall forward as it sits on O145R is 276
lbs. I think some people would be surprised if they really new what there
true "Firewall Forward" weight really was! The little things really add up.

Hi Dave !

Thanks for the real numbers - we need a lot more of these !!
I'm sure most O-320 installations run in the 320 - 350 lb. FWF range -
even though Lycoming claims about 250 lb. for the engine. Explains
why the Subaru 2.2 and 2.5 L engines seem to work so well as direct
replacements, weight-wise ..

I'm curious about your impressions of each engine combination.
Betting the Corvair didn't last too long ... Which engine did you
finally end up with ??

Suspect there are a few Rebel builders out there considering
ALL the options !! :-) So you're not really O/T.

engine weights / OFF TOPIC

Giday, Bob. I put about 285 hours on the Soob with my own belt type redrive. It was a good combo.
I only changed it to the Corvair with the Rinker gearbox because I wanted a bit more power. The Corvair
and gearbox behaved about the same as I'd estimate a fresh Lyc 0-235 would with it's 118 hp. Trouble
was, I sheared a flexplate / starter ring gear woodroffe key on a startup with only 38 hours on the combo.
Had to take the wings off and trailer the darn thing home about 15 miles. While doing so, a lad came by to
help and while joking with him about auto conversions, he offerred me a tired Lyc 0-235 C for $3,000 Cdn.
I zipped back the next day and gave him 60 pink ones, installed the engine within 60 days and have never
looked back. Upon our return from Sun n Fun 2002, a lad in Iowa said he'd give me $3,000 U.S. for the Corvair.
I slapped two new mags, wires and plugs from Mattituck ( total cost $1,239 Cdn), changed the oil and have
put over 100 hours on the Lyc since June of 2002.
It's unlikely that I'll ever fly an auto conversion again. The engines are fine, but the redrives are still unproven.
My need now is for a radial engine for the Fairchild anyway. I was going to put a Housai 285 hp in a Moose and
call it a Moose Lite. I emailed Murphy 3 times altogether for info and had not one reply to this date.
