quick-built

Hi all, might as well get into the act. Of course there is considerable
satisfaction in building your own machine. However if money and age
allows (if you are 28 you can't really be sweating out finishing the
machine for example!), absolutely go for the quick-built kit, or at
least the wings. Another factor is the old preference, some guys like to
be "mechanics" others like to fly as soon as possible and the kit they
are building is simply a means to an end. There are numerous examples
how you can go wrong and add many hours to your building time. Somehow I
built a nice horizontal stabilizer (Rebel) I forgot which side, when I
stuck it on the airplane the thing was warped and I had to do it all
over again. So much for the joy of building when you encounter an event
like that. I asked in my last message where the other builders were, the
hundreds you never hear from. Wow, five new names popped up. I know that
there are many kits out there, where a fatal mistake was made in
construction, meaning some error that cannot be so easily corrected, if
at all. These guys somewhat understandably kicked the whole project into
a corner never to take it up again.
Not that difficult a situation to get into, let's all admit that.
Obviously I am not talking about the true experts or a guy that is doing
his third or fourth Rebel or whatever. One final comment to a just
starting builder and the messages about tools needed, please gents get
two rivetguns, they are not that expensive one for the 1/8 and on for
the larger rivets, changing that nosepiece around each time will drive
you nuts and you probably will wear out a gun anyway, so buy two from
the start. Yes? Regards, Geert Frank
