Elevator Trim Tab Horn WAS: Re: Sunday Meeting

Brian & Guys

Just had a look at the tab & horn on our Elite and while it has the two sided
horn (two L shaped parts back to back) the only thing it ties into except the
skin is the front spar and this is by the first rivet of each of the L pieces,
the rest is just the skin, not even the rib (beside it).

I am going to have a good think about whether this is serious or not but right
now it doesn't sound good enough even compared to the (2 sided) Rebel that at
least ties into a rib on one side.

What do you Rebel & Elite guys think? Anybody see any signs of wear & tear on
your trims or was Bob's experience a rather scary fluke?

Bob, any idea what the factory Elite config is?

Cheers,

Dave R.

Great meeting yesterday with a lot of good information.

Based on our discussions, I checked my elevator trim tab. I could see no
sign at all of any flexing or fatique. The paint was perfect here as
well. It does have 3 rivets - 1 into the front tab spar & 2 into a
fore/aft rib. Still, I am going to fab up a new piece to reinforce it.

It would really be helpful for MAM to publish this stuff on their site. It
was quite a shock to find this out this weekend. I am not sure I would
have been able to handle such an ordeal re: the flutter incident! Way to
go Bob.

I feel much the same way about the spring gear i.e. their approach has been
underwhelming but do not want to criticize. I do feel I went out of my way
to submit CAD drawings of all my tank improvements - many of which are
incorporated into their present design. In return, it would have been
quite easy to supply some of the basic information. It would not do their
reputation much good to lose a builder/pilot to a flutter incident.

I also checked my elevators & found the left one to be quite tight i.e. no
lateral movement but the right one does have some (1/16" approx). Again, a
little thought would have gone a long way to resolve this design
weakness. I will address this over the winter as it is not serious but
left on its own, it will not get better no matter how much wishing I do.

If everyone works together we can make this a truly great aircraft design
with outstanding operational histories.

Just my thoughts

Hi Dave !

Can't remember what the factory Elite setup was, but the
current manual calls for 2 L-shaped horns, as you have. Given
that you already have the skin on, I would likely remove the horns,
put an .032 doubler under them, tying the leading edge "spar" to
the nearest rib. That should give some extra support to the horns,
and eliminate flex. I really like Ralph's idea of adding a partial
rib on either side to mount the horns onto, if you can get in there.
That should really secure things !

I think you would see movement of the skin, and possibly
the rivets, on a careful preflight, and that would be the warning
indication.... Apparently, I'm not the first to lose a tab horn !

I knew we kept the cut off ends of the EL ribs for a reason (chuckle), I can see a
reinforcement coming up soon, good foresight Ralph!

Thanks for the feedback guys,

Elevator Trim Tab Horn WAS: Re: Sunday Meeting

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:51 pm
by Walter Klatt
I took my trim tab horn off today, and installed a
second as per the MAM bulletin. I also added an .032
doubler underneath the skin tying the two ribs and spar
together for some added strength.

My skin and spar was not cracked as in Wayne's picture
in the files section, but it was definitely loosening
up, and the skin would lift when I pushed back and
forth on the trim tab. So it was just a matter of time
before the same thing would have happened to mine. I
have about 250 hours on my plane.

This is definitely an area to check carefully on
preflight, and should be fixed ASAP if you still have a
single horn.

Thanks Bobp, for alerting everyone to this problem.

Walter
