I used a good new titanium drill bit with lots of oil on a drill press and
had no problems.

i am drilling leaf spring tail skid (trailer leaf spring from canadian tire
as wayne uses), this is some really hard tough steel, can any one suggest
the best way to drill it, no way cheap drills will get through this stuff

I can tell you the way they do it in heavy truck spring shops: you mark the
spot that you need to drill with a soapstone and heat that spot, with a
torch, till it's a bit more than dull red. Let it cool slowly. Drill it
with a good bit at a slow speed, using lots of pressure. Basically, you've
annealed a small area of the spring. Doesn't seem to cause a problem with
large equipment.

I had one I couldn't get through with any of my cobalt bits back before I
had my own milling machine. Took it to the local machine shop and he made
quick work of it with a 3/8 end mill.

Carbide bit will go through with no problem. It will drill oversize if you
do it by hand so get the size bit just under if you need a good fit. I would
think annealing a spot would cause problems. The hole is already weakening that
spot and annealing will just make it more flexable so you might develope
cracks there. It is probably not a big deal in a truck spring since those springs
have so much more mass, the spot annealed is a smaller percentage of area.
MSCdirect.com is a good place to get any bit you can think of.

Hi Mike
I used a concrete bit in a drill press with steady moderate pressure.
Shattered one bit but they are cheap. They drill oversize so that might
be what Brad means by a carbide bit.
