exhaust hangers

Wayne and others,
I have posted a couple of pictures of a proposed hanger for my Forsling
Aviation crossover exhaust. Lycoming O-320-E2D. The hangers will be stainless
steel and have a 90* bend at the top with a hole for one of the sump bolts to
pass through. The lower end will be riveted to a hose clamp that is then
riveted to the pipe. The lower end attaches just forward of the ball joint. I
have seen other installations where the clamps are attached toward the rear of
the joint and somwhat further back. My thought was that unless you imobilize
the ball joint any clamping towards the back will be useless. Also the heat
cuffs get in the way of any sensible point of clamping. Any and all thoughts
would be appreciated.

I put my cabin heat muff right on the front pipe at the front of the engine.
Took a 2" scatt tube from the left front baffle. The tubes makes a fairly
good bend getting into the heat muff just to the left of the alternator.The
carb heat muff is also at the front but on the rear crossover pipe. There is
enough room for these muffs to be side by each.Of course the carb heat muff
has no ingong scatt tube.

Make sure you put a piece of screen (alum or stainless) over the opening for
your carb heat inlet on the shroud and secure with a hose clamp (or
similar..safety wire etc). Otherwise you will pull carb heat one day and
suck in a nest full of mice!!........and that will ruin your day totally if
you're airborne when you do it........not to mention the mice' as they get
jammed into your carb venturi one by one (if they don't make it through
there and up to a cylinder!!). Also keeps leaves etc from being sucked in if
nothing else.

Hi Charlie,
Aren't you flying yet? I bet you are close.
I'm a motor mechanic and know that exhausts must "wobble" with the
engine, to which they are rigidly attached. Otherwise they crack and fall off.
I haven't hung my engine yet, but the best solution I've seen so far
is from Wayne, he suggests a bracket from the tail pipes to the bolts
through the lower Lord mounts, and there is a pic in the Rebel files engine
(210) section.
