Up side down rebel

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, Alister. I know
the feeling well. It happened to me in my early days
when learning to fly the tail dragger. I didn't flip
over, at least, but did break one landing gear and had
a prop strike. I had insurance, but made the mistake of
letting a professional AME try to fix it. They took 5
months to do what I could have done in about 3 weeks,
and in the end, I had to finish it anyways. So if you
can do it yourself, you should come out ahead. The one
positive with my experience, is that I was able to make
a deal with the insurance company and engine guy, and
ended up with an overhauled engine for a very, very
good price.

Best of luck, and hope you're back up before too long.
Walter

No injuries thank goodness, just me on board
and the belts worked fine
even remembered to protect my neck when I
released the belts!).

I believe the insurance company is OK with
me repairing it myself, so with
the funds provided I might be able to afford
a few enhancements and change
the layout of a few things.( great how
quickly human nature bounces back
isn't it!!)

I have to say I was a little disappointed at
the amount of damage to the
instrument panel forward area, but I guess
aircraft are not designed to
stand on their nose, are they.

And Bruce, you are dead right, that sums it
up perfectly, there is a
tendency to see how far you can push things
and I certainly do know now.
Faced with a marginal call next time I may
think a little more about it.

Half a Cheer

Alister, sorry to hear about your
misfortune. When u rebuild, please use
the same paint scheme. I picked it out of
the MAM pictures to use as a
basis for mine. Thought it was the one
of the simplest and most
attractive one's there. Hope there was
no injusies.

I told you that I'd stay quiet Alister!! You could have kept it under wraps,
but I guess it's best to get it out in the open and carry on with the
rebuild. We're still trying to get someone to 'fess up to writing off their
Rebel Amphib last month, but he's staying really quiet!

Good luck with the insurance settlement and the rebuild..... and remember as
I told you I have pictures of just about every repair imaginable, so if
there is any hesitation on what to do with something just let me know!

Well I thought I better own up, I was playing in light snow the other day
with out skis of course!) and managed to turn JHY on her back.

Insurance luckily but complete rebuild required from instrument panel
forward, bulk strip on motor, new prop etc.some deformation lower inboard
rear of both wings and fuse at rear wing attach plus the usual on the
rudder
and vertical fin.

6 months out of the air maybe?

Serves me right!

No Cheers today

Alister,

Sorry to hear you bent your plane up. That's got to hurt! I know how it
goes...you keep pushing the limits to see how far you can go, and well, know you
know.

Can you collect the insurance money and do the repair yourself or do you even
want to? Can you choose who gets to fix it? To bad you're in the other
hemisphere or you might get Wayne to repair it.

Best of luck to you

I don't think there is any shame in admitting our mistakes. We've all made
them. The rest of us can learn something from others misfortune. I've done some
things that should have cost me more than it did. I was lucky, I guess (Knock
on wood).

Don't feel bad Alister. I think it just makes us better pilots.

Been there, done that, didn't feel much like buying the t-shirt. Took me
about 3 years to quit beating myself about the incident. Taught me real
well exactly how much crosswind a Kitfox on amphibs could NOT handle, or
maybe how much wind the pilot couldn't handle..... Either way, it's just
one of those experiences that keeps one humble.
