Walter,

It could be all that water you fly in has corroded your antenna ground plane.
Try taking your antenna off and clean the connection where it makes contact
with the fuselage skin.

I haven't had a chance to check things yet, but was
thinking too about the antenna. However, depending on
my squelch setting, I do know that I pick up
transmissions 50 and more miles away, so would think
the antenna would have to work for that. I do remember,
though, putting a lot of effort into cleaning the paint
off for mounting and sealing off the outside. And I
don't store it outside in the rain.

I had problems some time ago with a noise filter, and
installed a new one, but in a different location. You
are supposed to put it as close to your alternator as
possible, which I had before, but the old one got beat
apart there, probably from the heat and vibration. So
then I mounted it on the firewall, and maybe more noise
is now getting through to the radio. However, it does
not affect receiving, just transmitting. Anyway, this
will be the first thing for me to try and see if it
works. I am no expert at radios either, so I may have
trouble getting this one fixed.

Thanks, Nigel. I live in the Vancouver area, not far
from Chilliwack, actually.

There are a few things I need to check as soon as I
have a chance, and I appreciate the leads.

Hi Walter (and all)

I'm a radio ham in what spare time I've got
left after working on my Elite,
and I agree the antenna problem would
account for a loss in receive as well
as transmit, but it's surprising how well a
bad antenna can still receive.
You really need to test the antenna only, by
connecting it to a test box to
convince yourself one way or the other about
the antenna. Have a look in
your local area for ham radio or amateur
radio clubs if you don't know
anyone who does this. Your ideally after an
antenna analyser (by MFJ) or
even an SWR meter from a CB type radio setup
will work at aircraft powers to
give you some idea.

Another possibility may be the power supply
to the radio , as you will need
to draw more power to transmit than receive,
and if you have a bad
connection or some other resistance in the
line it will receive fine, but
not be able to run full power on transmit.

If you let me know where you are, I'll try
to find a contact for a local
club for you if you get stuck.

Good Luck

Yup, tried that, but that's not it.

My first step is to relocate the noise filter back to
the alternator and see if that helps. I started that
last night and should finish tonight, so will try it
again this weekend. Got a gang of people out at our
cottage again this weekend, so it will be busy.

When I was under the cowl, I noticed a couple of tiny
cracks starting again on my right exhaust pipe near
where the cross-over joins. Same one as I got welded
last year near the same spot. So I will have to get
that fixed again before my upcoming trips. I got the
old, old mild steel exhausts that MAM used to sell many
years ago. Looks like I may have to spring for the new
stainless ones that all you guys now have. With the
rising loonie, I'm hoping the price will drop a bit.

What next? Why couldn't these problems show up a few
months ago. Oh well, better now than when I'm 1000
miles from home.

Hi Walter
I have the same right side "y" pipe crack as you on 049R.It is an older mild
steel Murphy system.Fixed it 2yrs ago then put a stainless patch over the
section 3wks ago.Yesterday I spoke to the "stainless guy"and he is going to
make me a complete 2" system using my old 0-290 engine for a template. He
does not work in 1-3/4"material and the guys in the engine shop at Leavens
said 2" was no problem.I already had a bunch of new stainless Lycoming
flanges and then it will go 1-3/4"for stud clearance and step to 2".I'll let
you know how it turns out.........Angus

Hi Walter,
A thought on your exhaust problems, my old exhaust system
cracked in the same place more than once, it only came right after I put the
new system in they now use to support the exhaust ( it all hangs off the
back of the engine ).

Do you have this? Mine is really good now.( and I didn't have to buy the SS
system)

Cheers

Hi Walter

If you are going to use your handheld hook it up to your external antenna, you
will notice a hugh difference.
