MAM Exhaust

HELLO ALL
MAM's exhaust seems to be a nice piece of work but you can't get the two
pipes to exit the cowling in the same place. This is esthetically less than
pleasing. For lack of something to do I installed the gascolator as shown in
the MAM firewall layout. If I point the exhaust toward the centre (between
the cowling brace and gascolator) it is barely an inch from the
gascolator. Not a good thing. The left pipe can be exited forward of the
firewall about 4" from the gascolator. This is good. However the right
exhaust will not move this far forward. About the best it gets would leave a
half moon cut out out of the back edge of the cowling.

WHAT'Did ewe udders due?

Thanks again
Murray

MAM exhaust

We elected to purchase the MAM "factory" stainless exhaust for our Elite
/ O-360. It actually is manufactured by Forsling Aviation in Parker
Colorado. The first unit arrived and the quality was excellent except
the left exhaust was 3" to far forward to pass close enough to the
firewall lower flange for attachment there. John Forsling was most
cooperative in supplying a complete new left side which now is perfect.
Best "make it right" attitude I've experienced in a long time! We are
using the MAM mount, speed cowl, and O-360A4M so future units should fit
right up.

The carb heat muff comes without a screen, which you might want to add.
Two cabin heat muffs are supplied. I mounted the carb heat muff on the
rear cross over pipe and found room for the cabin heat muff on the front
cross over. There is no room for the second cabin heat muff that I can
find without it sticking out the cowl bottom and complicating the
exhaust attachment to the firewall as well. Perhaps we will try to
locate a short after market unit for the defrosters.

On balance, it is a very well made unit with excellent support.

Hi Ralph,
I would like to second your comments about John Forsling. I purchased my
original system from MAM and it was also built by John. The system fits fine
but does not have the capacity for my engine. John has built a pair of tuned
collectors with three pipes into each. The system is in the final fitting
and then goes to the ceramic coating folks. John has been a delight to work
with. The airplane is a 1000 miles from John's shop but with shipping back
and forth 3 times and lots of digital pictures, things are going well.
John has built me a beautiful system for a fair price.

Al,

I would reconsider the ceramic coating. Mine began to crack and peel almost
immediately. It now resembles a dry lake bed!

MAM exhaust

Hi Al,

I'm looking for exhaust ideas and found your email.
I'm curious about why the MAM stock exhaust for the IO-540 doesn't
have the capacity for your engine. How is the standard exhaust different
than the tuned exhaust? Is there a HP threshold at which you would recommend
switching? Are you satisfied with your tuned (and ceramic coated) exhaust?

Thanks,
Tim

MAM exhaust

Hi Tim,
Both exhaust systems come from John Forsling. The system MAM sells IMHO is
more that adequate for a stock Lyc 540 in the 260 HP range, the engine I'm
using is over 330 HP. When the engine was built, Lycon (the engine builder)
recommended a tuned system and the system I ordered was on back order for
over a year. I don't remember off hand the suppliers name but they build
lots of high performance exhaust systems for RV's and Harmon Rockets. I
needed a system and that is when I went to the off the shelf system that
MAM was selling, just to get the airplane flying. After the airplane was
flying I started to look for a new system and John said he was now building
one. John's new system was in the testing stage at that time with Lycon and
the dyno results were good.
The stock system has pipes from each exhaust port blended to a single pipe
for each side of the engine all pipe is the same size. The tuned system has
a three into one collector megaphone, that is made for a 540 cubic inch
engine. This system will help any 540 engine and is something to consider.
The ceramic coating is something to consider for any system. The heat stays
in the pipe, exits the pipes and there is very little corrosion on the
pipes. The only corrosion I have are a few spots on the collectors where
salt water spray has blasted away the ceramic. The temperatures under the
cowl are cooler and this helps all the other engine temps.
