I have 2 questions regarding the 1800 series floats.

1. We are to install 2 spray guards one on each side of the floats from
the step forward. I have looked at other floats in the area and none have
spray guards on the outside of the float, I am wondering if others have put
these on does it not affect docking with the spray guard hanging in the
way.

2. Has anyone done anything different with the keel rub in the step
area? By the book this looks like a weak way of protecting the step. I am
looking at making a bracket more on the line of what EDO or others use.

Del, these rails help blast water down and guide air under the floats for a
quicker take off run!! At full size on the outboard rail they can get dinged
up a bit against the dock if you're not careful. With Howard's he had me cut
the outside rail down to about 60% of what is spelled out and he hasn't
dented it yet. His take off against ANY other make of 150HP aircraft on
straight floats is amazing (let alone any on amphibs like Howard's)

I presume you are building straight floats?? And talking about how they take
the keep strip and just bridge it across on an angle from the bottom step to
the rear slanted keel strip. Looks a little mickie moose for beaching
purposes doesn't it!? but would probably be fine. I would be tempted though
to use a mill and make a framed plate to fit the area inside this triangle
to beef it up.

I just have the stock Murphy inside float spray rail
and step width extensions at the back. The front spray
rails do the job, and I see no reason for them on the
outside. Some people have extended the inside spray
rails to join the step extensions, but I see no point
to that either. Your ultimate take-off performance is
more affected by what happens at the back of the step,
and that's where those little step width extensions on
both sides of the float really do their job.

As Wayne, says, you can bend those outside step
extensions against a dock, but so far have not had that
happen with mine. You need to be careful on the ground
too, and around the hangar, as you could get a nasty
cut in your shins if you accidentally bump them. They
are quite sharp.

If I could ever get my wife to operate my little
digital camera video function properly I will be able
to verify my float take-off times. Today, I got off a
quick one at our lake that I'm sure was less than 7
seconds, but she missed it. And this was at 1640 gross
weight. Yes, there was a little wind (probably around
10 knots), but it was still fast considering.

Yesterday from the same spot, I took some people on
rides, and one of them was to inspect a 7900 foot
glacier mountain top at 600 feet AGL. It was an
incredible sight for them. And that's where those 150
horses really come in handy.
