Advice for Oshkosh

Hi Rick !

I agree with Warren - grab a tent & stay on the grounds !!
Motels are booked a year in advance, but sometimes there ARE spaces
at the university (lots of folks double-book), but it's more fun
to be on the grounds - just you, and about 400,000 others !! ;-)
The facilities are good, there's camp stores for grub, and lots
of porta-potties, and shower buildings. Cost of all facilities is
included in the camping fee (about $15/night) paid in advance.
If you're not a member of EAA, best to join (& get a card !)
before going - you need to be a member to camp, and admission
is cheaper too. You CAN sign up at the gate, though...

Try to find a shady spot for your tent (good luck !).
Find the International Tent - near the Control Tower as soon as
you can, & register as an International Visitor. Ask when & where
the International Party is - usually Friday night - DON'T MISS IT !!
This is our favourite party, and it's a well-kept secret ...
food's not spectacular - bratwurst & chips (crisps), and cheese &
crackers, but there's a tanker truck full of beer !! And it's all
FREE !!! (except for tossing a small donation in the jar at
the International Tent).

Everything is a LOT more expensive than in years gone by,
especially food on the grounds, but you can shop right across
the road, bring stuff back to the tent, & bbq ! There aren't
as many 'really good deals' on equipment anymore, either,
but, if you're careful, there are still SOME bargains to be had !
(Like the usual 40% off on Whelen strobes ...)

If all goes well, we'll be between Rebel Rambles and on
the flight line at OSH, with the Rebel. Look forward to seeing you there !!

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!

So hide the good cutlery guys 'n' gals , 'cause here we come ! :-)

Problem is .... there's no, reasonably cheap accommodation left ... the
University of Wisconsin is all booked out & we are number 261 on the
waiting list !

Anyone got any low cost options for accommodation for Oshkosh from the
28th of July to the 4th of August ???

Hope to catch up with as many of you lot as we can while we are over
there ... this is my first BIG overseas trip !..... what a way to start

Advice for Oshkosh

Howdy,

Hope you dudes don't mind my butting in here. The resident's of OshKosh are
very friendly and accommodating to visitors. I have stayed at the same
lady's home for 7 yrs.

People who have rooms available register with the EAA. Call the EAA. It is
a lot cheaper than a motel or hotel.

G'day Bruce :-)
Hi Rick
We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Appleton last year, having just turned up
without a prior booking. It's a bit of a drive, but there were quite a few
other EAAer's there as well.
Hope this helps

Advice for Oshkosh

Are you guys going to make the run with QAs 744?
Otherwise, rent a car from Milwaukee (MKE) 90 mi south or Chicago (ORD)
180 mi south.
Stop at Walmart, buy a tent and sleeping bags. If you want to go for it
the maybe some chairs, table and a cooler.
This can all be had for three guys for much less then one nights worth
of hotel.
Show up at the EAA site at Shroller field which is part of the EAA
grounds and pitch your tent for a few bucks a night. First come first
severed and last year still had lots of room. Lots of restaurants
nearby in town. Site has portapots which are kept very clean and
buildings with showers. Overall well done. My wife, a Five star camper
didn't even mind it for a few days and we even went back a second time.
You can park next to your tent and a bus regularly take campers to the
main grounds.
If fact if you're on a tighter budget, you don't even need to rent a car
if you fly directly into Oshkosh. EAA has shuttle buses that take you to
shopping and you can pick you camping gear up then. Walmart was always
well stocked but it might be best to bring a tent from home and buy the
rest there.

We now stay at distant relatives there, I'm proud to say my
Great-grandfather (Warren Woodbury Montgomery) was the first non-native
(Non-Abo) child born there in 1851 and buried just west of the Hwy on
approach to the east/west Rwy and my Great Great Grandfather (Thomas
Warren Montgomery) having arrived in 1849 from New Hampshire is buried
in the riverside cemetery central Oshkosh. How's that for Oshkosh roots!!!!!

You'll enjoy it!!!!!!!
We may stop in again at OSH as we'll be travelling from east to west then.
