Britt,

Great info. Did he mention anything about radiators? Did he indicate if he would be willing to do custom engine mounts? If he did custom engine mounts that would solve a big problem, at least for myself.

Had a great conversation with Ron at Ivoprop on Friday and they have no
upper structural limitations on the prop RPM on the Ivo props i.e. 2700
rpm
is fine. He also gave me Chris Opperman's number (attached below) as
someone who has experience with the LS1 engine - I had amother great
conversation with Chris - He is doing research for NASA on the
appropriateness of auto engines for aviation and had some interesting
observations (My interpetation) -

The LS1 is far superior to the newer higher HP LS6 engine - some talk of
the
camshaft profile is more agressive and the engine is designed for bursts
of
power where the LS1 was designed to run at full throttle indefinately. (I
was thinking the LS6 must be better because it was more mature and more
powerfull)

The auto engine HP ratings are conservative since they include exhaust,
cat/emissions and everything else and don't have as good a ram air effect
(I
wanted at least 350 at 4800 - Chris assured me that the stock LS1 would do
it)

Take the LS1 crate engine and use it as is - i.e. no upgraded cams, rods,
heads, maf or anything.

The stock LS1 with the 76" 3 blade Ivo Prop produces 1483 lbs of static
thrust - measured

Skip the superchargers and turbochargers because the increase in BMEP
tends
to cause bottom end failures, add weight and increase the charge air temp.

Chris was thinking that the LS1 would be a good engine for a RV7 since it
would put out over 200 Hp at 14,000 ft (unsupercharged/turbocharged) and
generally be really fast ~~ over 250 TAS?? - I asked how the RV7 could
carry
the weight of the V8-LS1 and (look out Murphy Rebels - derate it and just
use the extra HP at altitude?) Chris believes that the LS1 with the IVO is
10 lbs lighter than the IO360 (with a CS Hartzel) - LS1 @350 Lbs? with
accessories?? - (If that is the case I'll have to move the battery up
front!
- I was planning on at least 500 lbs)

Anyway - Chris has spinners for the IVO prop should you happen to go that
way -- I am not sure if he has the Corvette engine firewall forward
package
ready yet - the attachment below was from Ivo Prop -

Rick - It turns out that he and Chuck up in Garden Valley Id. have known
each other for quite some time and are sharing info - He commented on how
nice Chucks engine mount was - I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I
called Chuck and he would be glad to talk to anyone about his stuff - I am
going up there this weekend and will ask if Chuck if he would make engine
mounts for the Super Rebel -

I didn't ask Chris about the firewall forward thing (I know Chuck wanted to
get some time on his so he could speak from experience - and Chuck has a
"temporary radiator" i.e. not crammed into a cowling) - I will also ask
Chuck where Chris is at with the firewall forward package -

Also - encouraging thrust #s 1483 Lbs with the Ivo- as I looked back in the
archive - It has more than the M14P with the 2 blade V-530 and the 94"
Hoffman at least at Sea Level -

To quote Kevin Kimball, VP Engineering - Jim Kimball Enterprises, Inc. -
2/14/03 post to dcsol.com

The 94" diameter 2 blade V-530 prop is capable of producing 1320 pounds of
static
thrust on an M14P. The 94" diameter Hoffmann 3 blade make approx 1450lb of
static thrust. The 98.5" diameter 3 blade MT produces 1560lb of static
thrust. A 102" diameter MT 3 blade produces 1640 lb of static thrust.
