Carb/FI was Re: Prop sizing

Hi Bruce !

Just purely personal preference ! My experiences with
'aircraft' (Lyc.) fuel injection systems have left me thinking that
most of it is downright crude compared to modern automotive
FI systems - just consider the infamous "hot start" problems !!
I just can't believe the contortions our club has people go
through to start their NEW C-172's !! I can jump in my Mazda
and go, anytime, hot or cold, "just turn the key" !

Aircraft FI is more expensive, complex, and failure-prone,
and doesn't <seem> to give any more power ( in spite of the CLAIMS
by manufacturers !) - my impressions .... ! A friend had a couple
of damaged injectors, touring through Alaska somewhere - had to
wait 2 days while new ones were flown in from lower 48.. $$$$$ !!
(Of course, carbs can have problems too, but at least THOSE
even <I> can fix, in a pinch ! ) Dunno,.... I just like to
have manual carb heat and mixture to play with, I guess !

OR - a complete, nice, modern automotive system, STOCK, so it
can be easily fixed by a friendly, neighbourhood mechanic, with
off-the-shelf parts ! I have NO problem with a "Subaru 2.5 L, 165 hp.,
Marcotte, W-D" setup, for example - smooth, economical, starts
nicely, and has easy options for heating & even air-conditioning ! ;-^)
Nothing wrong with polishing & porting it though ... ;-)

Just MHO - YMMV !! ;-) :-)

Hi Bobp,

Just curious, why a carb over aircraft fuel injection?

Yes Bobp,

I have to agree. There is something very attractive about the simple and non
complex that I gravitate to, especially when it comes to aircraft. Just
thought I'd ask.
