Panel spacing for flight instruments

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:02 pm

Could someone advise me what is the accepted edge distance between the flight
instrument hole cutouts (3 1/8 inch)in the Rebel panel? Also, what is the
accepted edge distance between 2 1/4 inch cutouts?

Thanks for the help.

Panel spacing for flight instruments

Hi Roger !

If it's not too late, you should consider doing a
'floating panel' ! Just cut the instrument holes 1/4" oversize in
the panel, and mount a second panel over it to carry the instruments.
The second panel can be mounted on shock mounts, or just bolts
with rubber fuel line over them at the corners of the panel
(and maybe a couple in the center) ...

The main advantage is not the shock absorbing, but the
BIG improvement in EASE OF INSTALLATION & REPAIR !!! You can
pop the floating panel off and work on the plumbing in comfort,
instead of crawling under the panel ! :-)

Same idea applies to the electrical panel, usually on
the left angle section, except you don't need an overlay, just
a doubler around the opening. The electrical panel is supported
by 2 sections of piano hinge, top & bottom - just pull the top
pin, swing it down, & solder away !!! :-)

Also, if you're doing a Rebel panel, many builders have
run a 1 1/2" or 2" alum. angle along the bottom of the panel,
full width, fastened to the door posts. (Cut & bend at the corners &
rivet in alum. bridge material). This strengthens the panel
AND provides an excellent place to mount throttle, mixture,
trim & ignition switches where they won't wiggle like the would
on the orig. panel ! It also leaves enough room for 2 rows of
full sized instruments ....

As for the edge distance/distance between instruments,
I'm guessing that 1/2" would be absolute min. - you could run a
doubler behind if in doubt.... Hope someone has a better answer
on that one !

......bobp

Regarding the question about instrument spacing, I was hoping someone could
give me a more definitive answer, but...I can work with that.

Thanks again,

Roger,
For 3 1/8" diameter instruments use 3.5" centers as a minimum. Most
instrument cases are 3 1/4" square and the 3.5 center allows a
comfortable 1/4" space. Some cases are 3 3/16" sq.
For 2 1/4 instruments use 2.5" centers see uploaded pics of my panels.
Good luck, you'll need it,
Rick D.

Panel spacing for flight instruments

Roger, I measured as well what I used on my personal panel and pretty much
everything else I've done. With the 3 1/8" flight instruments I have them
mounted to an 8" high floating plate. I leave 5/8" edge spacing top and
bottom and this leaves exactly 1/2" between the gauge lenses. You can put
them as close as 3/8" apart if you need to and this would match the 3.5"
centers minimum Rick has spelled out.

There are pictures of my panel on my website in the services section click
on instrument panels or direct link below.
