This was a concern to us also for the reasons stated plus a finished
appearance. My co-builder wife has filled each exposed rivet mandrel
hole with Poly Fil. This is a very light 2 part filler available from
Aircraft Spruce. The only problem (apart from the large amount of labor
involved) is high mandrel breaks which will leave steel exposed after
filing flat. We expect that after painting it will look like a solid
rivet job.
