Dual Redundant Ignition Was: Re: V8 Ignition

Thanks Dave. It's expensive, but I really like the Quickcar MSD dual
ignition setup. I wonder how I integrate a backup battery into the system?
Of course batteries rarely fail all at once. I should notice battery
problems long before catastrophic failure. Would be nice to have a small
motorcycle battery just to run the ignition system in case something does go
wrong with the primary battery though.

Guys
This issue has to have been worked out & available commercially, every
NASCAR
Winston Cup race car has redundant ingnition systems, you hear them say they
have
switched to the backup system and fixed a miss problem just by flipping a
switch
as they are driving. I would expect that by digging around in that market
(and
the professional sports car racing market) you would find a fully engineered
solution which comes in a box ready to install.
I would look at companies like MSD www.msdignition.com and Quickcar.
Quickcar has
an integration package for dual redundant installation with 2 coils & 2 MSD
boxes, http://www.quickcar.net/ign_sys/ign_sys.html. With the MSD systems
you
can even have an over-rev limiter if you are so inclined! I would expect to
find
something at Electromotive also.
Hope this helps

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ ... &prmenbr=3Mike,
MSD sells a number of items for a dual ignition setup. They have a dual
magnetic pickup distributor (#8356), an automatic coil selector (#8210),
and a wire harness and switch to allow the use of redundant ignition
amplifiers. I plan to run my second ignition amplifier from a small backup
battery. The automatic coil selector is a package of diodes so that when
you switch to your backup ignition amp the spark then is routed from your
second coil as well. This at least keeps you from falling out of the sky
due to one transistor.
Jegs has the MSD distributor as well as the other parts. The switch and
harness I could not find this go round.....
