Slow rivet gun

OK, I know somebody has seen this before... I bought MAM's tool kit with my
Moose, and the rivet gun I've got takes 4-5 seconds to let go of the mandrel
after every pull. I could go a lot quicker if I didn't have to sit there
with my hand out waiting for the mandrel to fall out! This is the plain
Jane blue rivet gun that Murphy sells... is there a way I can adjust this to
allow the air to bleed out more quickly?

Thanks, Mike

Thanks Wayne, I'll definately go through all this tomorrow... don't think
it was anything I have done though since it was like this when I pulled it
out of the box!

Thanks, Mike

Have you been a bad boy and slugged the back of the pulling head with a
hammer to help put in a stubborn 3/16 rivet?? I do it all the time!;o))

This burrs the hole that the mechanism comes out through when it pulls and
then it drags as it's going back in, or the mechanism tube that pops out
sometimes gets oversize as well and needs to be ground off slightly.

Another thing to check is if your base has turned slightly from the body
of
the gun. This hangs up the wire that goes from the trigger to the valve
mechanism and causes a slow release. If neither of those cure it then take
the check valve assembly apart that's below the air inlet fitting. Looks
like a nut, remove slowly and keep track of the order of spring/check
valve
etc and give a good cleaning.

Also if the big ring nut on the back is loose it changes the stroke and
won't let go of the mandrel as well either.

Still not working, remove the nose outer body and move the nose piece
holder
forward half a turn or so on the threaded area and then tighten back up
and
try again. Sometimes just a small adjustment here changes thing for better
or worse as well!

Good Luck,

That sounds like the easiest approach yet... I always like trying easy first!

Try a SMALL squirt of light oil into the air fitting, hook it up and
strengthen you hand for awhile pulling and releasing the trigger. Maybe it

Yes it will stop altogether eventually if not occasionally oiled in the
air line. To help pull things together, I use a regulator with only 30
or so psi which might also help speed the retract. If low on oil in the
hydraulic section the stroke increases which might also slow the
retract. If the mandral does not fall out by itself you might try one
size larger nose piece.

After taking it all apart and looking at everything you mentioned in your
previous e-mail I finally used the bigger hammer method with success...
actually it was the bigger drill bit method. I took the small piston out of
the cylinder that the trigger actuates, and drilled the 2 small holes the air
escapes through out to #30. Works much better now.

Mike:

Take the ring clamp off, remove the big black looking washer in the end,to
do this, after removing the ring just put a little air to it and the black
washer will fly out, don't point it toward yourself. Now pull the black
plunger out, clean the side walls of the barrel with throttle body
cleaner.Clean the shaft as well thats on the black plunger. Put some WD40 on
it. Make sure you don't loose oil out of the gun itself. If you do ,get a
funnel or something with a long tube and fill the gun back up with
oil.Reinstall the plunger and put the rest back together.

Now take the end apart where the rivets go in and clean it up as well.
Lubricate with WD40.Watch how it all comes apart for reassembly.
Have done mine twice. It's better than brand new.Tghis gun goes a long way
with a tune up.

Good Luck
Murray
