Hi Alister.
Your recent e-mail exchange on the Jabiru engine caught my eye. One of them
mentioned the 6 cyl engine churning out 120 hp @ 3300 rpm. On the
www.jabiru.co.uk/3300spec.htm site I see this engine rated at 100 hp@2750
rpm and the displacement being 3300cc. The 4 cyl version does run at 3300rpm
(80hp) and I would think the 3.3 liter can run faster than the 2750.
At 3000 RPM one could still swing a 74"dia prop. It woul reach about Mach
0.9 at the tip (about the same as the C172 seaplane 80" dia prop). I wonder
what the Jabiru 3.3 puts out at 3000, 3100 or 3200RPM and how robust it is
to take it.
If you find any info on any of this, please let me know. PAUL KUCERA , REBEL

Hi Folks,

Just went down to the Aero Club bar for a quick one and the right chap was
there, he has used the jabaru engine and has researched them pretty well.

Apparently the earlier ones had no valve lubrication of any significance,
it didn't do them any good! Once they got that solved it was the end of the
problem, they are a very good motor.

They have changed the cylinders now so that the 4 cylinder is producing 80
hp (optional I think), up from the previous 60hp. It weighs 50lb less than
the 912 and costs a bundle of dollars less too (NZ$7000).

What may also be of interest is the new 6 cylinder version produces 120hp.
weighs the same as the 912 and is about the same price, not bad,I would
have thought.

I was warned to beware when comparing the specs of both engines to make
sure the weight of the Rotax includes radiator, coolant, reduction box etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi Paul,

The Jabiru NZ dealer lives in my home town, I gave him a fax of your
e-mail, in his answer he states that the 6 cylinder is basically the same
motor as the 4 cylinder ( plus a couple of pots) and can handle the same
revs. At 3300rpm the 6 cylinder will produce 120hp. He does wonder if a
74in prop may be too much for it ( I'm running a 74 on my 0-320).

We are holding our National Sport Aviation Fly in here next week ( the NZ
version of your Oshkosh(( spelling?))), Apparently Rod Stiff ( unfortunate
name) the head Guy from Jabiru is bringing over a 6 cylinder, so it will be
interesting to check it out.

If you have any queries you want me to put to him, I'm quite happy to do
that.

Cheers

Alister

Hi Alister,

I figured the 74" prop would be OK up to 3000 rpm at which the engine puts
out about 110hp. At 3300 one would have to swing 68" or so. Probably some
combo in between is the most efficient.

It would be interesting to find out from Rod some of the features that got
the engine with all accessories down to the claimed 160 lb.

Prototype test figures, the possibility of using autogas and recommended TBO
when running at higher RPM would also be of interest (probably too early for
some of this).

Why advertise only 100 hp and not 120?

Have a good time at the show. Paul

Just had a conversation with the local Jabiru dealer here in NZ. He mentioned that with the very weak state of the AUS and NZ dollar at the moment there are some particularly good deals on engines.

The 120HP six cylinder (They changed the induction system,120HP at 3050rpm and 107HP at 2700rpm now, I think he said) can be landed in the US for about US$10,300 (about $3,000 less than the US dealer is quoting!)

The 80HP four cylinder can be landed for about US$7,000.

These engines are getting a bit of history behind them now, so they may be worth considering.

Cheers

FYI / FWIW - I don't want to re-open a Jabiru debate but in case anyone may
be interested, I thought it worth mentioning that today Jabiru put them on
sale, reportedly their first sale in 7 years. The 3300 6 cyl. 120 HP is
$2000 off, down to USD $16K+ -- which is about what they were two years ago.
