My 0-235 saga continues.....

I have now confirmed that the engine was originally manufactured as 118hp at
2800rpm. The modification which installed 108hp low compression pistons can
easily be restored by replacing the pistons with 8.5:1 high compression
pistons. That's the easy bit. According to the logs the cylinders were NU
chromed at the o/h stage. An engineer that works on lycomings suggested that
chroming process may have removed sufficient material to leave the cylinders
vulnerable to cracking under the higher pressures???????? I must say that I
do not readily accept this idea as there are cylinders out there that have
been chromed and kept at their original hp rating without problems.
Strangley, the cylinders are not paint coded for chromed barrels.

Another quirk has arisen with regards to the modification. The logs state
that 1/2" exhaust valves were fitted but the engineer said this was not
possible because the 1/2" valves were not introduced until the 0-320 model.
Lycoming have confirmed that there is no approval for this mod either but did
not confirm or deny that it was possible to be done.???????? If it was done

Bob, did you talk with an Engineer or was he a salesman for Lycoming. If not
he should be!!!

You can remove no more than 26thou, I'm told for a O-320 at least (and
figure they're all about the same), from standard bore to clean up a
cylinder prior to chroming back to std size. Anymore removal than this
leaves the cylinders too thin and then you would be very prone to cracking.
If the engine was done by a reputable shop I'm sure they didn't remove
anymore than that and most likely only 10 or 15thou if the cylinders were
"worn" from std size to start with thus needing a refurb.

O-320's didn't have 1/2" valves in the originally either (older ones had
7/16"), although when you are buying one or overhauling one make sure it is
upgraded to such. If the O-235 is homebuilt category engine then there is no
reason that it couldn't have the same treatment and get the bigger valve
diameter (if indeed Lycoming doesn't approve, but can't see why). Why would
you want to change them back if you have the better valves?

Hhi Bob,

That is the twist in all this the engine itself runs beautifully, I cannot
answer the question of oversize/standard pistons now, log does not seem to
tell me that bit. I know that the previous owner had the pitch set at
15degrees (4" in from the tip) and I could only get around 2000rpm (static I
recall) I repitched it to obtain 2300 rpm static and this came out at
11.5deg. I was working on a max rpm of 2400rpm.

Tires? MacCauley?? not thick tundra type but more you C-152 variety. I can
see your point though, the wider the tyre the less it will dig into the
ground, hence, less drag more speed.

If the engine is not using excessive oil, then your rings
have seated well on the chrome, and maybe it's not a good idea
to mess with it.....

Larger valves are a "Good Thing"(tm) - again, if they're
working OK, don't tinker !!

It would be good to know if the pistons were oversize
or standard - if standard, you shouldn't have a big problem
changing back, but again, please try tweaking prop settings first.
Sounds like just getting another couple of hundred rpm might
make a BIG improvement for you !

Another thought - get the tail up as quickly as possible
on takeoff, to reduce drag. I recall that my O-235 Rebel used
to roll about 400 ft. on grass, solo. What tures do you have ??

Thanks Ken,

There seems to be a few factors to be taken into account to get the right
performance. I am still leaning towards increasing the power available, which
in turn must be available in each phase of flight.

I am uncertain as to the hp of the subaru but again your prop diameter seems
to point to the fact that mine is undesized.

I know that wd told me that for the 0-235 they would have expected a prop
diameter of 68 -70". It seems from the opinions I have seen that most think
that the 68" may be on the small side. It may prove somewhat academic though
if I plumb for the sensenich. I know that there are plenty of rebels turning
wd now. What I think I wil do is uprate the engine and see how it goes with
the wd. Then decide on th prop.

This is probably redundant as Bobp has already pretty much said it but
if you look at a chart of engine power vs. rpm it is surprizing how
little power some of these engines make while going down a runway while
running 300 or 400 rpm below rated rpm. I think Lycomings usually have
to turn about 2700 rpm to make rated power. There are lots of
installations that can barely get 110 hp out of a 150 hp engine.

Did Ivo ever solve their variable pitch blade retention problems? Seems
odd that you don't seem to hear of those props on rebels.

I have a IVO Magnum 72" ground adjustable prop on my Subaru powered Rebel. I
have not had a blade move yet, but it is a bit of a pain to
remove the spinner every 10 hrs to check the metalized tape between the
blades for breakage.
