If you're talking about the brace in the middle of the windshield from the
top carry through down to the dash by the top of the firewall. Way back when
you built the windshield and before MAM made the windshield with a compound
curve in it, it was needed. But with the latest windshield mid 1990s with the
compound curve I've been told it's not needed. I put the brace in as per
plans and all it seems to do is give you a nice place to mount you're
compass.

Hi Rick !

Don't bother with the brace - this seems to be another
of those "Cessna did it so it must be good ! " things. The Cessnas
need these braces for float flying, but their cabin structure is
nowhere near as strong as the Rebel.

Some builders here with lots of float hours have added
these "V" braces - and you're right, it might be a good idea
for float flying, if you are doing a LOT of it ! I'm a little
leery of moving stresses around like this - it could be what
Wayne calls the "bigger band-aid" problem, but I guess it might
be good for floats.... The good V braces I've seen go right
through the panel & firewall, and are welded to a tube that
runs between the top engine mounts. This solves the 'compressing'
engine mount problem too ! Of course, you'll have added the
'floatfix bulletin' mods to strengthen the firewall & doorposts for the
larger engine (and plates like Wayne supplies, for extra
peace of mind !)....

If you are going to the heavier engine, you should
have the FUS-70 (.025) corner wraps all around - that will take
care of the extra load/arm !

Good luck ! You'll love the performance with the O-320 !!

I can understand doing this for a plane on floats ... as there is no
"give" if you do a hard water arrival, (and the stresses setup on the
triangular corner braces must be pretty bad) .... but I've seen a few on
Rebels on wheels as well ....

Do you guys think this is a really good idea ... ? or is it a bit of an
overkill ... if we don't do constant BAD landings ?

Also wondering about this as we are going to stick in an 0-320 ... and
the brain is ticking over re the extra weight / moment of the nooo
engine :-)
