Dear Mike or other builders,

Can I trouble you for some insight on your Moose kit? I have spoken to Brian

Not having built anything else except a Quicksilver MX, I can't really
compare it to anything. Murphy's kit's do not come with plans like the Vans
kits do... however they do use a lot of CAD drawings in their construction
manuals. The manuals can be confusing, but between Murphy's tech support
and this internet group... you will get answers to all your questions. I
purchased the kit, not the quick build, but I did get a good look at the
quick builds when I was at the factory last year, and I was very impressed
with the quality. Having helped another Fairbanks builder quite a bit on
his SR2500 kit there are a number of little things that I want to do
differently than the methods used on the quick build... but none of these
are issues of safety. Building times vary greatly from one builder to
another... but I think the times advertised are rarely achieved... count on
more time, not less. As for flying characteristics... I'm not really
qualified to answer this one. I'm a low time (~70 hr) pilot... and I've
only flown the Moose demonstrator one time. But I can definately say the
performance was very impressive. I also found the Moose to be very stable
and easy to handle. When Robin firewalled the throttle I think we were at
pattern altitude before I started breathing again! After his demonstration
flight I hopped back in the Cherokee 180 I'd flown down to Anchorage and
pushed the throttle in... and thought for a few seconds that we weren't even
moving! The runway sure seemed a lot shorter in that Cherokee.

As for building times, this is my first metal plane and I currently have a
little over 1700 carefully documented hours in my SR2500 (not a quick
build). I estimate that I have about 20-40 more hours of work to do to
complete the airframe alone (unpainted). Your guess is as good as mine for
the instrument panel work and firewall forward.

Mike,

Thanks for the information. The Moose looks great on paper and in the air!!
You and the other builders will be a pleasure to communicate with in the
future. I look forward to sharing my trials and tribulations during the
building process. Now all I have to do is wait 10 months for delivery of the
QB kit.

Can you reccomend any completed Moose quick build owners that I should contact?

Hi Aaron,

I've been working on my quick build for about 9 1/2 months. I previously
built a composite aircraft and re-built two tube-n-fabric ones. The murphy
components are as high quality as any I've seen. The workmanship on the
fast built components is great. For the life of me, I haven't figured out
how those guys drive that many rivets so perfectly! I've found one gusset
that I had to drill out, due to an alignment problem. The manual could use
a lot of work. You've built a plane, so you understand the concept of
accepted techniques. Just as with the RV, once you figure out how MAM does
things, it's not hard to figure out what to do. This message board is
invaluable. Did you build the RV in the time advertised? If so, you'll
probably do the Murphy likewise. I might not be the perfect respondant for
your time considerations, because I'm a pretty casual builder. Mine will be
done when I've enjoyed each of the myriad of tasks involved. Not sooner. I
never flew a Murphy nor have I even ridden in one. I sat in the demo plane
several times, liked what I saw, and have never read an ill word about
flight characteristics. It won't fly like a Cessna nor will it fly like my
Glasair, but I'll get acquainted with it and we'll grow to be friends. I've
got my M14-P and also plan that installation. Floats sound great, but
that's a consideration for the future.
Will I do it again? Of course I would. For the same reason that you're
gonna do it again. The Moose is a fairly mature design, perhaps not as well
documented as the RV, but supported by good people. I'm pleased that I got
my money's worth.

Dear Aaron,
I can't pass comments upon a number of your queries pertaining to a Moose
kit, but I can certainly advise you about my experience of Murphy's factory
support.
During the middle of last year, I ordered an Elite tail assembly subkit.
When it came to assembling the elevator section, I discovered that a number
of the pre-punched rivet holes on the skin were way out of alignment.
When I advised Colleen, at Murphy, of my problem, they arranged within a
week to airfreigt to me, a new skin at no expense to me; I live in Sydney,
Australia.
Factory support I will give an A+ rating!!
