The Murphy Builders Site

I'd like to get a look at Murphy's (high back) seat upholstery kit for the
Rebel. Would anyone have some photo's they could post to the list. Or can
anyone identify any pictures currently in the archives that show Murphy's
seats? I asked Colleen at MAM for photo's but have not had a response.

Hello Roger:

2 cents

I took my seat frames to an upholstery shop, had cushions made which were
about 6" high at the front and 3" rear. Brought them home to try out before
putting on fabric. Felt really good. 2" soft foam on back.They are now
getting finished.Less than $500:00 cdn for both seats.(transport rated
fabric to boot)

Thanks for that info. I took mine to a local auto upholsterer also. He quoted
me $450 USD just for labor. Foam and covering material costs would have pushed
the estimate even higher.

I also talked via telephone & email with Paul Workman at Ohio Aircraft
Interiors as suggested by BobP. Seemed like a very nice guy and was able to
give me an estimate after looking at several photos of the seat frame that I
sent to him. He said he had never done a Rebel seat but said it didn't look
much different than some others he'd done. But by the time I added the cost of
shipping my seats round trip from Oregon to Ohio the cost would have approach
that of Oregon Aero's $1300/pr estimate.

So I am still shopping and looking at options, including doing some or all of
it myself (though that would be a last resort!).

A long time ago ( in a galaxy far away?) I worked in a boat repair
shop. I recall that there were several upholstery places that did seats
for boats, hot rods, tractors, etc. and it always surprised me how cheap
they were. Might be worth looking into. Any job that is done for
"aircraft" is going to cost twice as much as it's worth. In fact, you may
be able to buy a ready made boat or tractor seat and just remove the
padding and upholstery and put it on the rebel frame.

Hello Roger:

I took my Long-EZ to LunDean Aircraft Upholstery some 15 years ago and if memory
serves me, the cost for the front and rear seats (no tube frames) was
pushing $900.00 US! He used three different densities of foam including Confor
foam in specific places. He also added lumbar support foam and a little lip on
the left and right sides of the verticals (sports car seat style) to hug your
torso.

A fellow Cozy builder just picked up some foam, cut it to size and had a local
"mom-and-pop"
upholstery shop do the sewing. They seemed to be happy with the outcome.
Although, there ain't
nothing like sitting on Confor foam for those long flights.

My 2.56 cents worth.

My friend( I have one) gave me the foam out of a Volkswagon Getta. To me it
seemed that they would be a good start, however as it turned out my
upholsterer did not use them. As I could see for good reason.

Take Terry's advise and go to a smaller upholstery shop or a furniture place.
Stay away from auto or aircraft shops they're way over priced.

I had my seats done by a local boat upholsterer. $1000Cdn cold cash for FOUR
seats and two door panels. Was a few years ago mind you and Penetanguishene
WAS the home of a Grew boats factory for MANY years, so many people in the
area that know the "craft"!
