Do any of you with experience using Murphy's seat upholstery for the Rebel
have any opinions regarding the value; comfort; quality, etc? Their (Murphy's)
price seems very reasonable when compared to the quote I received from
OregonAero ($650 each seat-fabric covered). However, OregonAero's reputation
for comfort seems above reproach. I know "you get what you pay for", but I
sure would appreciate any comments.

Dear Roger,

MAM itself told me that the upholstery package they were selling was pretty
minimal quality-wise. I finally bit the bullet and sent my (Elite) seat
frames to Oregon Aero. I didn't put the aluminum sheet on them, as Tony
Erickson their tech guy suggested straps. The .016 and a bunch of rivets in
the frame didn't appeal.

I may do the fabric locally, but it didn't appear that I would save much on
the cushioning even with the many south-of-the-border upholsterers in this
area. I attended a workshop at OSH one year put on by that interior wizard
from Ohio, and I decided right then and there this was a homebuilding skill
I could take a pass on!

Not yet flying
They seem very well done and a lot cheaper that any thing else that I looked
at

ROGER
I ordered temperfoam in soft medium and stiff. Enough to do both seats from
Wicks aircraft. Total right at $100 US. with shipping. Cant find the receipt
for the FAA approved naugahide (SP?) in two colors, but remember it was right
at $100 US also. Took it to a local upholsterer labor for two colors with
panels and pockets $150 US. That was a few years ago. If you go that rout
bring it all to the upholsterer and let him cut and attach the foam they all
have there own way of doing things. The temperfoam is nice EXCEPT in cold
weather when it's like a rock till you're derriere warns it up to fit you're
shape.

I am quite satisfied with the MAM upholstery kit for the price. My seats
are more comfortable than the Cherokee 180 I've been flying lately. One
thing that does not work is the stick on velcro. It sticks just fine to the
aluminum but the side that is on the seat material must be sewn on. Doesn't
stick to the fabric very well at all. Don't try to sew through the stick-on
velcro either. Buy some new velcro for sewing on.
