Has anyone out there had any experience with the Ross PSRU?
How about the Formula Power Subaru conversion. I don't think they are in
business anymore but not sure. I found one for sale I am
contemplating purchasing.
Thanks,
Keith Leitch R661

You will hear good and bad but based on several years of listening to
others I would hesitate to touch one.
1. Older models may need some major upgrades including lubrication, gear
set mounting in the housing, shaft endplay, etc.
2. A few have been reported with serious quality control issues.
3. The gearsets have very short life in some of the units but others
seem fine.
4. Because of the configuration it can be difficult to swap to another
psru without major changes to cowling, etc. etc.
5. I wouldn't fly a new one without complete dissassembly and thorough
inspection, let alone a prop strike experienced one. Probably should
have dissassembly and inspection every annually for at least the first
couple of years as problems seem to occur relatively quickly and without
any obvious external warnings.
6. Yes they are no longer manufactured.
7. That said it seems there are some very happy users of them as well.

My first line states exactly that my comments are "hearsay" but that
doesn't mean they are totally off base. Guys who have my respect such as
Al Wick and Jeff Liot have publicly documented their adventures with the
Ross drive on the AirSoob and FlySoob and other e-mail lists. 560 hours
is wonderful but the Ross has not been trouble free for everyone even
for 100 hours. I only pay attention to Subaru applications but that is
the application that Keith asked about and I attempted to summarize
several years of reading those lists for him. If you know why you have
been more successful than these gentleman please share. I would like to
hear about your installation and Keith has also asked for thoughts on
the psru.

Pretty well said. And Al Wick (is the man) who has worked through most of the
bugs that a few Ross PSRU's have had. IMHO you should run 100% synthetic oil
in a planetary drive. Because of oil shear and heat. My Ross raises the oil
temp more than a (properly) cooled engine. The Ross was originally made for a
tractor configuration and I believe some of the bad rap on the PSRU is when
it was used in a pusher configuration.

#4 You are defiantly right on there.
