Howdy all,
I'm happy to report I'm now a Rebel builder. I bought #534R, tail pieces
done, one wing started. I'm really looking forward to this project and the
plane! I won't begin for another couple months as I must first complete my
Kolb ultralight rebuild.

Once started, I'll want to sell off the spring aluminum gear in trade for
standard gear. Also am still thinking in terms of Subaru 2.2L, but have
*plenty* of time before getting to that decision.

Hi Ben !!

Congratulations !!! You're going to love it ! Sounds
like you got a good deal, with no problems...

If you go Subaru, keep an eye out for the 2.5 L - they're
a bit more expensive, but 165 hp. right out of the car is probably
worth the extra $$ !! (and the Marcotte re-drive - if you can get
one ! ;-) )

BEN
I have a the bungee gear parts available, but don't need the spring gear.
I've got two sets of them laying here already. If you would like to work
something out with the owner of this project I can put you in contact with
him.

Bob and others,
Yes, I'll consider the 2.5L also. However, there is info that a cam regrind
will add 25hp to either engine, with a smooth torque curve all the way up from
2000rpm. With 25 extra horses the 2.2 puts out 155-160 at 5700 rpm. I figure
that is plenty, and a better option than taking on the small extra weight of
the 2.5L, reportedly 14-20lbs. Still, I've plenty of rivets before having to
decide on this. :)

Hi Ben !

A revised cam <might> give 25 more hp (or it might take more
changes ....), but - to me, one of the big advantages of an auto
conversion would be to be able to replace any needed parts
"off-the-shelf" from any dealer or auto parts jobber.

The Formula Power conversions did get about 165 hp out of
an EJ-22, BUT - they used <special> pistons, rods, cams, and injection
system .... if the custom speed shop that made them was out of
business, so were you !! Also, a bit awkward to get parts if you're
out in the boonies somewhere ...

Just my thoughts ...... The 2.5 L is also a newer engine,
currently in production, so parts will likely be available longer.
I hear that Eggenfellner's 2.5L kit for the Rebel is a 'bolt-on'
deal - not sure about their re-drive, but time will tell - they've
sold about 100 of them ! By now, there are enough Subarus flying
that the knowledge of 'how to do it' is out there - just a case
of asking all the questions. There are several people on this
list who could help guide you...
