Pitot Tube

I bought the Murphy Pitot tube setup with my kit but now realize it is
not heated. Any suggestions on a good heated one to buy. I notice
Aircraft Spruce has both a heated pitot tube model and heated
pitot-static tube model. I'd appreciate the groups opinions on what to
use here in Western Washington in my SR/Moose. Any mounting tips?

Roger,

There is a great mounting kit available from Gretz Aero (www.gretzaero.com)
based on the traditional AN5812 pitot tube. There is some good advice on
this website about the various options available.

I used the AN5812-12 heated pitot tube from Aircraft Spruce. I also used
two of the Aircraft Spruce PN 15165 static ports that mount with a nut on
the inside. The static ports were mounted in each forward door post. To
mount the pitot tube a small piece of 2.023 x .857 x .049 4130 streamline
tubing was used as indicated in the Aircraft Spruce catalog. Just weld some
tabs on at 90 degrees and rivet to the bottom skin. A doubler was used to
strengthen the bottom skin where it was mounted. I mounted mine a bit
inside of where the lift strut attaches so that people wouldn't hit it with
their head when walking around under the wing. It's in front of the strut
so the turbulent air created by the strut shouldn't affect the reading (I
hope). My wing actually fell off the blocks it was sitting on once and
landed hard on the pitot tube without hurting anything. I mounted it close
to the access hole for the lift strut attachments so that the same hole
could be used to get to the pitot tube fittings. I used 16 gauge wire for
power which the chart in my AC43-13 says should be fine for 10 amps and the
distance to the panel. I'm using the aircraft structure itself for ground
with grounding straps connecting sections together.

I am using a Piper pitot-static shark fin blade style which is what all the cherokees use. I do believe with the M14 on the front of a Moose you need the static source away from the fuselage. Murphy"s demo airspeed seems to bounce around a fair amount - could be the indicator I suppose.

At the Copperstate Airshow I was amused to observe that the Moose's static
line was disconnected from the ports and receiving only inside cabin air.

They work a lot better that way on a Murphy product!!! I gave in and just
opened my alternate (cabin) air valve on my static system, so I have a cross
between the pilot side static and the cabin pressure. I rarely look at my
A/S anyhow, but this makes it work pretty well coming down final.

On Bob's XWI the static port is in the same location as mine (pilot side
panel in front of door post), but his has a little blocker plate in front of
it to stop it from getting as much suction effect at the port. I thought his
A/S worked pretty good when I was test flying it but maybe Bob can pipe in
and tell us how well it is really working!

Cheers,
Wayne

I used the extension kit as mentioned however I mounted it on the
inspection cover just outside of the strut.
This way I can remove the whole pitot tube just by undoing the
inspection cover screws.
This area is also still nearly // to the aircraft reference line just
before the leading edge curves up.
During stowage I reversed the tube so it's inside the wing avoiding risk
of damage as Mike nearly had.

Hi Wayne !

Same as yours was !! NDG ! I disconnected that outside
plate too - it read 30+ mph standing still idling, or more if there
was a cross wind, so it was no good at low speeds. It was reading
about 5 - 9 mph too high at cruise, so I just removed the tube
and went to cabin air .... It's better than the plate & deflector !

On gliders, the static is usually 'way back on the fuse,
or even on the fin - might be better there on the Rebel, too, but
sounds like a lot of tubing ! I hardly look at the airspeed
anyway ...

Hello to all!

Wayne, I have saw in the files that you have use a stainless tube for the pitot tube and you have fit it in the 12th bay of the left wing. Where the tube go across the leading edge skin, what have you done around the tubing? (for sealing and protect the skin from)

To Mike Betti, every one have is owned "best recipe" for paint and primer. I have never paint a complete airplane too (my first construction) but I am a industrial paint distributor and I have a done a lot of test since coupled of months. I do not think that put primer long time before paint is really a good idea. After complete cure, the epoxy primer structure come so "closed" that you have to sand it before to apply coathing. You have more chance of a bad adhesion between paint and primer. Find a good supplier in your area, and always respect the manufacturer (of the paint/primer) recommendation and you should not have problem.

Jean, we cheated on the Rebel with the tip mounted pitot and threw the 1/4
inch Parker Parflex thru the small D in front of the front spar. Don't see
it ever being an issue and wearing into the alum.

Hmmm - have they switched to the one that Spruce sells. Mine (from MAM)
is about a foot long piece of 3/4" tubing welded to a flange that wraps
around the leading edge. I removed it when I installed Angus's drooped
leading edge.
