I'm about to mount my holder for lights in my second wing and the
instructions say any of the first 3 outboard bays. I purchased this unit
from Trevor Yaworski ..Trevor are you online? Do you or does anyone
else have any thoughts as to which bay would be best and why? I've
plunked it temporarily in the 3rd bay in but have no thoughts pro or
con. A search through the forum came up with several people using it but
only one mentions locations (Charlie Starr) as between ribs 14 and 15
....obviously he has a bigger wing than me ( super Rebel perhaps?)
Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated before I cut out the
front spar and wing skin.

I have my "Trevor" light assy. mounted in the second bay in from the end.

I'm with Lonnie ! Either the second bay, or the outboard bay -
easier to get at, and it weakens the wing less. I know, it's not
carrying much load out there anyway, but why not keep all the strength
you can ??!!

Thanks guys! Great response! Looks like the 2nd bay is the place to go. I
guess they must provide light in the right places as well from either
position
and no one has had problems with wiring so I think I'll go with the crowd
...must look better in the second bay anyway. :-) ..Tim I would love to see
some pics if it's not too much trouble. Making great progress on my second
wing too. It's only taken 10 days for me to get where i was after 3 years
with the first wing, with any luck may have this one closed by the end of
jan.

What are the chances of getting these pictures on one of your sites? We
will be
looking at this issue but probably not for a fair while as work issues have
put
building on the back burner for a while. We would like to see what others
are
doing and what this light mount looks like.

How about it, can we build up a photo archive similar to the mailing list???

under questions and other parts. If you click on the various pictures there
today
you'll find (in most cases) multiple pictures of the planes their engines

I've gone with Trevors units as well and fully endorse these. They are
almost a
work of art.I guess owing to my heavy metal and flight safety background
I've gone
with two units, one for each wing. I'm actually scared sh%#less of this VFR
stuff
having flown only IFR with TCAS to boot! Also always fly with lights on
below
10,000' to help keep the Bee One Are Dees out of the way (B1RDs) Anyway,
I've
installed these in the second bay from the tip. I think it was Charlie that
recommended this position as it doesn't interfere with the tip and in my
installation gives me maximum separation between the lights. My argument may
not be
valid for you as with a single installation you'd probably want it closer to
the
C/L to reduce any spacial disorientation.

Sounds like there is a lot of interest in landing light positions!

Several builders up here are using automotive halogen lights mounted
on extentions of the spar, so they shine out the front of the wing tip(s).
These lights are very inexpensive, considerably brighter AND more durable
than the old Cessna style lights (John Deere, if you get the right part
no. ;-) ). They are also lighter, and easier to mount. The root portion
of the tips is almost straight, so you can make a flat wrap of plexiglas
for the front of the light.

If you're not quite ready yet, you might want to wait for Dave
Fife's new PRE-FORMED complete Hoerner wing tips - they will have nav. &
strobe light mounting points at the tip, and pre-reinforced cut outs in
front for landing lights !!! (email -> aircrafttips@yahoo.com)

Lights can be put in both tips - gives more visibility for VFR,
and one light can be set down for easier taxiing, while the other is
set higher for landing. Or both can be set to converge at a certain
distance ahead, to aid in landing judgement (when the lights meet,
you are at .... 500 ft. ???)

Some enterprising builders have also mounted one of these
halogen lights in the front of the cowling, mounted on a base that can
swivel, controlled by a Bowden cable from the cockpit !! Handy for
steering around corners on taxiways !!

...obviously he has a bigger wing than me ( super Rebel perhaps?)
Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated before I cut out the
front spar and wing skin.

OK Bob what's the part number? and where can you get them? ... I'm assuming
the
John Deere light is an exact fit and the same brightness as the Cessna but
is
quite a bit cheaper?
